Time for a story! After they installed the metal detectors over at the old federal court house, I was going in for a hearing and the Marshals out front decided to play a joke on me. I'm sliding my brief case through the x-ray machine and walking through the metal detector when they stop me and said, "we've got a problem." They tell me to look at the x-ray screen and there . . . in my brief case . . . is a Glock 19. I totally freaked out and started spewing denials. They laughed. It turns out they have some sort of template that they can project to evaluate gun silhouettes. The metal detectors in the new federal courthouse in downtown Portland are the only ones anywhere that pick up the metal in my legs and hand. I always get wanded.
This is Federal courthouse in Portland -- your tax dollars at work: https://bora.co/project/mark-o-hatfield-us-courthouse/ It is impressively ****-free.

Last summer, my wife and I and a friend decided to visit the county
courthouse just to tour the building. The three classic bronze statues
that sit atop it (Law, Justice & Strength IIRC) had been restored and
were sitting out front for close up views before being lifted up to the
roof.

As I remembered, the inside was glorious. Wide staircases, granite
columns, gorgeous murals, ornamental windows... truly beautiful.

Then, since we had to pass by it to get to our car, we decided to visit
the new (maybe 15 years old?) federal courthouse nearby.

It had the same architectural charm as the inside of a refrigerator.
Everything was bleak, sterile and devoid of any and all character.

It did have a heck of a metal detector, though! The county's never
squealed about my wife's replacement hip. But the fed's lit up like a
fire truck. I thought they were going to make her take it off.

The Multnomah County Court House (Portland) was once grand but is now a **** hole. I'm embarrassed taking clients there. We're getting a new one. You can watch the construction on a live feed. http://dwpwebcams.com/mcc/stream.htm You can see the tip-top of my building next to the construction crane.

This is off-topic and based on one tiny sample, but:

There are those like Joerg who brag about how facilities will get SO
many people out of cars, and trumpet Portland's supposed 7% bike
commuting rate.

As I've said, if one actually travels around Portland, one does not see
7% of the people moving by bike. Cars still dominate. It shows in that
live feed. (I'm now watching during lunch time in Portland.)

I'm in favor of more bicycling, but we need to be realistic.

I, too, am kind of amazed at the lack of bike traffic in that shot. It's a mess when I'm coming to work, and there is a pretty constant dribble (certainly no Amsterdam) near my office. Maybe they've all gone to an Antifa meeting -- or there was a ****-tastrophy somewhere.

BTW, do you know this woman? https://katu.com/news/nation-world/o...ugs-12-06-2018 This was on our local news. Now the rest of the world knows about Ohio! Don't deny it! You're all a bunch of zombie tattooed drug freaks!

Holy cow! I wondered why she hadn't been meeting us for coffee lately!

Actually, I don't drink coffee. But I'm surprised they caught her. She
usually just blends right into the crowd of other zombie-tattoo fans
around here.

Beauty, as they say, is certainly in the eye of the beholder :-) Or in
this case, not!

I hold as a matter of faith that she is some other guy's
dream. Celebrate diversity!

Can you still say "other guy's"? I thought that, under the current
non-sexual fad that one would have to say something like "other
person's" or maybe even more neuter free, "other thing's"

cheers,

John B.

Sheesh!

Exactly and shows what a useless wang measure it is.

Easy and very unwise to have that $USmillion locked up in your own
home. we have a more economical and lesser home and an equivalent
amount in an "investment' property now returning an income.
Alternatively, you could have some of it in shares if you wanted the
risk.or govenment bonds(YMMV)
for lowest risk.

Another comment from a bigtime investor.

Define your "big time investor".
Investor =/= gsmbler.
My investments didn't loose 30% of their value or anywhere like it. The
ones that "lost" 8% were managed by other people, or though what they
actually lost was 8% of unrealised value. As I remember it, there was
plenty of warning that a "big correction" was going to hit and sane
investors moved their assets to the less risky.

Lol, sucker. Seriously I've had plenty of people advising me how I should
invest and use my assets over the decades. Very few were big picture
people and were really just follows of the latest fashion. Now I'm
retired and they are not because they still owe large amounts of money to
other entities.

Around here, we're currently having a "cost of property " correction and
sadly too many were on ultra-thin margins that have now blown away and
they either have to make payments from other means or face foreclosure
with major losses and their whole house of cards crumbling away. At least
renters will soon have copious choice from falling rents.

Not so long ago it was cheap overseas money to buy shares when the dollar
had parity. The share market has slumped and the dollar is down to 70%
and tales of woe abounded.

Plenty of others. What did you get caught it?

It's often difficult to get a lot of support from the public for money
for buildings like court houses, jails, county office buildings, and
city halls even if the existing buildings have significant issues.
Libraries and parks get more support.

Speaking only for myself.

It took decades to get funding for the new MCCC courthouse. Meanwhile, the Feds have been spending like drunks. The Eugene USDC courthouse is laughably over-done. https://tinyurl.com/y8lz2llx Going in there for a hearing is like being on the Queen Mary with four other passengers. As you wander the halls, you can stop and read Article III. https://tinyurl.com/y89cbo8j And then marvel at the interior of the courtroom: https://www.jedunn.com/sites/default...trm%20copy.jpg

Tom, do you actually read? And think? The so called bigtime investors
that you demean are not whining about how they lost their money, or
live in a miserable neighborhood or buy cheap Chinese wheels. But you,
the millionair do....

You are perfectly able to spend your money any way you like. Do not tell me that you know how to spend mine.

Above (you forgot to delete your remarks) where you comment "Another

describes his financial situation as having provided a comfortable
home and an investment that provides an income.
