They certainly do have the same rigths as motorists. A demonstration
consisting of a large pack of cars would need a permit under the same
rules. (Taxi drivers do this from time to time.)

You can pretend it's just a bunch of legal road users who
"coincidentally" happen to be at the same place at the same time. You
can also pretend you're a chicken. But that doesn't make it so.

They should apply for a permit. The city should grant one, and the
police and the demonstrators should all obey the law.

As for me, I'll be legally riding my bicycle somewhere else, hoping no
leaderless masses of cyclists get in the way.

But it isn't a demonstration. It is a bunch of bikes all going the
same place. Cars do it all the time and block up roads all over.
Perhaps you've even seen it happen. I've seen blocks so choked with
cars that an ambulance couldn't get through! If they had been biking
instead, there would have been plenty of room.

How many cops were arrested when they blocked the streets around city
hall because they didn't get a raise? Did someone say zero?

Lets not forget how the drunken rabble of cops TERRORIZED the city
with TERRORIST TACTICS like holding the Brooklyn Bridge HOSTAGE.

There were no arrests for "drunken or disorderly" that day!

And WHO was there at the podium, fanning the flames of ANARCHY?

RUDY GHOULIANI.

All you have to do is pass the test, have enough of a college
education, pass the physical exams, pass the agility test, have your
life and family fully investigated by superior officers, and you too
can block or direct traffic all day if you like.

Says you. I often bike in places where there are other cyclists going
the same direction at the same time. But we're not intentionally
following one another, we don't plan to meet on the last Friday evening
of the month at a predetermined place, and we aren't attempting to
"raise awareness" by getting in people's way. We are traffic.
Critical Mass is not -- it's a demonstration. No matter what you say.

Critical Mass doesn't usually happen in my municipality. Yet car
drivers are generally respectful of cyclists, and have experience
sharing the road. How is this possible? It's because people bike
often here, generally know how to ride in the street safely, and don't
form large, obnoxious groups on purpose.

And to address the rest of this sub-thread, how is cops' misbehavior in
their demonstrations a justification for anything?
