I just saw the new animated movie "Triplets of Bellevue".
The movie is based on a young boy that grows up to race in the Tour de
France.
It is a comedy and is outstanding. One of the best cycling films to come out
in a long time.

Where is it playing? Just on the coast, or will it make it to "flyover"
country?

Let me say this about the film - while it was definitely interesting, it is
about as much a bicycle movie as was Harold and Maud.

There is essentially no speach so the fact that it is mostly in French makes
no difference. The version I saw was "dubbed" which means that TWO sentences
were in English.

It is a cartoon with very stylized characterizations and some of them are
shockingly accurate such as the bicyclists laying along the road gasping
like fish out of the water.

Surely the producer/director was a bicycle racing fan from the late 50's or
so.

I was glad to go see it but I wouldn't see it a second time.

This wonderful film has been showing in New York for a few months. It is
one of those films with great word of mouth -- and it won the NY film
Critics award for best animation. It is (as is all great animation) highly
stylized, relies on little or no dialog (it is in french, but with common
french word that everyone understands), and tells a wonderful story of a
grandmother raising her grandson who seems perpetually bored until she buys
him a tricycle. He becomes addicted to cycling, and it consumes his whole
life.

There are many training scenes that will bring a smile to anyone who has
spent any time seriosly training on a bicycle. The scenes -- with the
grandmother acting as coach and being dragged along behind her grandson on a
trycycle, all the while pacing him with a shrill whistle, while he powers
his way up one of the many hors categorie climbs that populate this film --
are priceless.

During the tour the grandson gets kidnapped.....but I will not divulge
anymore.

I would expect this to become a cyling cult film.

Cheers,

Ben
