Default Fines for Australian cycling offenses

Effective March 1 2016, the Government of NSW has upped the fine for a
range of cycling offenses from $71 to a whopping $319. That's a 450% hike.
One of the offenses includes not wearing a helmet and as luck would have
it, probably the first cyclist to be booked for helmetless riding under
the revised fines structure is a US citizen working in Sydney.

He says that the cops in NYC have better things to do than worry about
this sort of stuff. Perhaps he should go back there and enjoy the
glorious springtime weather.
His retro looking purple singlespeeder does not appear to have a bell so
he was lucky not to be pinged for that too. No bell is now worth $106.
I'd wear a helmet most of the time anyway but I believe the Australia-
wide compulsory helmet law is unnecessary. Unfortunately, after more
than twenty years we are stuck with it.

Wow, steep fines. You can thank the AHZs for the mandatory helmet laws.
