Default Home Power Magazine - Bicycling

The current issue (Mar/Apr 2016) of Home Power Magazine has two
articles on bicycling. Nothing really earth shaking and very basic,
but might be worthwhile reading:

Pedal & Power: Electric Bicycles
http://www.homepower.com/articles/vehicles/all-electric/pedal-power-electric-bicycles

Bicycling as Transportation
http://www.homepower.com/articles/vehicles/project-profiles/bicycling-transportation

The problem with electrifying a bike is that the artform is still in a developmental stage. You can do it very simply by buying a well-developed, complete kit; you simply gotta spend the time to understand what is good (works) and what is wishful thinking, usually boutique-priced. Or you can be screwed by the endless interdisciplinary difficulties of matching up fast-developing technologies, some of them dangerous (the batteries for instance). Following that plan, I have successfully installed two electric setups, and just fitted a new, different, bigger battery to my mid motor, without doing any expensive damage and without becoming sn unpaid beta tester for a Chinese manufacturer.

Lots of stories on Endless-sphere of guys who tried to save a few bucks by putting together a separate motor, cells, battery controller, charger, and operating controls and ended up with nothing but frustration and all their money wasted.

For comparison: Here in Ireland a good Kalkhoff bike with a Bosch motor driven by Panasonic cells, with the smoothest controls in the business (only proper torque measurement too), can be had new for about two grand in Euro (not all that many more in American dollars with the present rate of exchange). You can't build an electrric bike of that quality for so little. Of couse it is a bike aimed at shopping and lowest common denominator commuters, but that is its charm. Cyclists with special needs (speed, big hills, excessive range) probably need around a third more to put together a really fine electrified bike. Probably in most cases be smarter to adapt one's demands to the Kalkhoff.

? Successfully assembling an electric bike for reliable commuting was possible 10 years ago without significant Internet access...for an experienced amateur home garage mechanic.

Try a current search for components .

Possible building a solar cell LSR for crossing AUS
