I see that point, but isnt drilling terrible for strength?

Not necessarily; in fact the opposite is often true. Human bones have
holes all through them, and can withstand amazing force and impact. And
in many instances, hollow is much stronger than solid materials.

you don't gain strength by taking away material. solid bone would be a
lot stronger. but the strength to weight ratio might be worse; the
added weight wouldn't be worth the extra strength.

Absolutely not true. It wouldn't have necessary flex, and would be much
more prone to breakage. If you were right, we'd have solid bones by
now. And yes, you can certainly gain strength, efficiency and speed, by
taking away *unnecessary* material.

i still think they will flat spot easier. Idk, does the extra width help
more than the drillings hurt? Do the drillings make it structurally
stronger.

You can't gain strength by drilling holes in something. Be serious.

You might be able to gain strength by *designing* something with less
material; for example, a super-thin oversized aluminum tube like on a
Cannondale is stronger than a thicker tube on an older aluminum bike
like a Vitus. But drilling holes in a Vitus will make it weaker.
