Is that why they call you airhead? AH but you would be wrong...I wear a REAL helmet not the unsafe **** foisted off on bicyclists. 8^) I compensate for a head made of camembertsic? by having testicular tissues of diamond. Ti is for the "little peopl" who don't own the road. -- Keith Don't say that before the large number of motorcyclists who do NOT wear a helmet. By the way, diamond doesn't crack under a hammer? OK, now for the serious stuff...

Their whole attitude* is friendly and you are not considered an "outcast" for riding a bike. You may be a local or a tourist from Europe, and that sounds intimidating to the bullies out there. Too many SUVs from Miami and other areas, but they seem somewhat tamed down there. I think everybody down there drops their defenses and enjoys the parties, the people, etc. And I think IT HAS A LOT TO DO WITH THE FORMS OF TRANPORTATION THEY'VE GOT. * I think it was word chosen by my "comrade-in-arms" in another thread. |

I'm sure many people here have been already to Key West, so we can talk a common language. Well, for those who don't, you see a lot of bicycles around town, with some of the major streets having bike lanes. There's also scooters and EVs, which goes to mean that SMALL IS BETTER down there. Not Main Street, America, right? So could the be a model for the future of America, not far-fetched models like Holland that would take a revolution (mine) and the firing of our politicians, just an acceptance of civilized behavior among our fellow Americans? In other words, CAN WE LEAVE THE JUNGLE BEHIND? 'Face it: Bigger is better. Since it's a jungle out there, where the meek get eaten for lunch, if you wanna be Tarzan, you'd better swing a bigger club.' http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles..._chevy_engine_... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WHY THE BANANA REVOLUTION? (home of the Dutch model!) http://webspawner.com/users/bananarevolution Maybe Fire Island in NY could be a good example of a bicycle oriented society. Eric |

If I wanted to have the official viewpoint, I'd tune to Fox News, I guess. Anyway, there's seem to be a contradiction between Key West design (old town that ironically comes to be called "new urbanism" nowadays) and the urban sprawl representative of the American landscape... (I answer below) Originally Posted by andrelam "I've visted KeyWest and would agree that if there is ANY town in America that can be made largely car free this one would be it. You'd be able to open up the main streets near where the cruise ships arrive and make then all 100 pedestrian zones. In Holland this works great is just about every village or city I've seen. Delivery vehicles can still make it through, they just drive very slowly. Cyclist and pedestrians have no problem integrating in those streets either." Happy riding, André *** Yep, then we are back to square one... We don't have bikes in Main Street because it was made to accommodate cars, so we'd have to start by demolishing 75% of America, and then build it again. And yet, I'm sure we can accomodate bikes in the suburban landscape if there was the POLITICAL WILL and/or public demand. |

Myself, I welcome the diversity... Perhaps you actually mean "attention" or "largest possible audience for your views." It's the only resort left to those who, by personal reputation or choice of idiotic subject matter, know their threads won't get going unless they expand their net large enough to catch sufficient numbers of loonies. Suppose every message I and every other person here posted was cross- posted to a dozen or more newsgroups, related or not, in an effort to have our views read by as many people as possible. It would tend to negate the rationale for having newsgroups devoted to particular areas of interest - areas which, although never pure in content, are nevertheless identifiable, making people better able to filter out subjects they don't want to be deluged with (like non-Americans with endless rehashing of a single American 9/11 controversy). If that's too hard to get your head around, then imagine the extreme of that: No newsgroups at all on usenet. Just one, big super- newsgroup for everything and everyone. Now *there's* diversity for ya, right? Then imagine how much luck anyone would have pursuing topics they are interested in. End result: No one uses the resource any longer because it's become unusable. People who engage in what King of Apes does prove they don't understand a thing about sharing a common resource (usenet). And, while showing that, he then preaches to others about sharing the road. |

You, cross-posting vitriol about Bush and 9/11 here day after day after day for 5 years without a break... that's not an example of being angry, uptight or easily offended. But, if someone suggests you give it a break, then it's *their* panties that are in a wad. Riiiiiiight. |
