Default What is the Link Between Engineers and Unicycles?

I was a Music Education major in college. Have spent the past 15 years
working as a Unix computer administrator.

I think people who are interested in unicycling tend to be high (at
least above average) achievers. There was a boy in my Boy Scout troop
about 25 years ago who rode a unicycle. He went on to be something like
an aerospace engineer. He was also part of what influenced me to learn
to ride.

I think anecdotally that's possibly true. On the first NZ Unicycle
Weekend I organised, we had about 4 or 5 people with PhDs and most
people with postgrad qualifications (mostly computer related or
engineering related).

Maybe we're just geeks

Also note that all the people responding that they are engineers, or
otherwise related to the field are on the internet...
some of us are even on Usenet. Which certainly biases the responses
towards geekdom.

Studying chemical engineering/materials science...and a friend in
computer science engineering. I get the most interest from my nerd
(read: smart, science-y types) friends.

I work as a software engineer, and my main motivation to get out on the
unicycle is to clear my head after (or during) work and focus on
something else for awhile. I think the intensity of trying to stay on
top helps me let go of the stress in a short period of time, and I've
always loved the outdoors so it gets me out where I want to be.

Hmmm. Let's see if we "clever" engineers can figure out why we might
know other engineers and technically oriented folk who also know how to
unicycle. Perhaps we don't get out much?

I have an electrical engineering degree and worked in the field for 5
years before moving more into programming and now I've moved into
management. I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere.

Nothing unusual there. People who can complete a music degree tend to
also be able to do well with computers. There's some funny math and
brain thinking in music theory.

I'd say I have a double major in engineering (IE and software), but
then Harper would make fun of me.

The old days of RSU were heavily biased towards geeks since only geeks
were accessing usenet or would bother to sign up for an email list.
Now with the Unicyclist.com forum we're getting a broader base but that
new base seems to be mostly tech savvy young people. Perhaps those
young people will grow up to be engineers or music majors or IT
professionals.

Mostly I think it has more to do with the psychology of the types of
people drawn to individual activities like cycling, unicycling,
running, hiking, etc. vs. group activities like football, soccer,
basketball, and other team sports. Different strokes for different
folks. Some people are going to be drawn more towards one form of
activity than another.

I was supposed to be an electronic engineer, then got distracted by
software.
Now after 15 years of working as a programmer I wish I'd stuck with the
hardware :/
