Well, make that 2.0 (what's a decimal point here or there?)

I turned 60 today, so decided that 0 degrees F, -20 wind chills, and
snow covered roads here in northern IN were NOT going to confine me.
Belive me though, 2 miles was plenty. I would be interested in
hearing from those of you who commuted today (or did an otherwise
"honorable" ride) despite sub-zero temps.

Hey guys -

Grey (Meredith? Joel?) commented:

... -20 wind chills, and snow covered roads here in
northern IN were NOT going to confine me.

To which Joel (Grey? McRae?) replied:

I went out for a ride today, it was 17 which felt
like 25 below...

Well, I don't know if it might serve as a kind of
vicarious inspiration, or just make some folks feel
grumpy, but there are some pix from our local recumbent
group's ride this weekend in SoCal on our website, with
this lead-in link:

http://www.vcrr.org/news.htm

Our wind chill factor was also a little below 20 degrees,
but that's PLUS twenty Celsius, of course. Seriously, we
did see a bit more warm clothing than usual, with some
folks popping in and out of extra layers through the day.
Enjoy...

Regards,
Wayne

I live in Indianapolis and bike commute year around - including this
morning. I only live a little over 3 miles so it was no real issue. We
don't have any snow to speak of right now. That is suppose to change
tomorrow with 3 to 6 inches of snow in our forecast. In the rare event
we do get significant ice accumulation I walk and push the bike in the
morning. The city usually has the ice melted by the time I come home. In
snowy or icy weather I use an upright bike with fat knobby tires. For the
record I am 57 years old.

Anyone who rides any kind of two-wheeler on ice is a freaking moron.
Knobbies do no good at all on ice. You even have to be damn careful on snow
too.

Please get yourself to psychiatrist and have your head examined.

Cycling is not possible and certainly not enjoyable when the temps and the
wind chill become extreme. Indiana is the tropics compared to Minnesota.
Trust me on this, forget about cycling unless and until the temps are in the
30's at least. The freezing point of water is the clue to what is possible
and what is not.

The main g.d. problem with cycling here in SW Minnesota is the g.d. wind. It
just blows and blows and never stops. Believe you me, it takes all the fun
out of cycling.

I went out for a ride today, it was 17° which felt like 25°below 0°, I
rode about 1 mile and I had it, the ice was hanging from my Baclava, and I
looked like a Walrus. I won't try that again. At least the groundhog said
winter is almost over.

Joel

Joel is far smarter than I previously gave him credit for. Cycling only
makes sense within certain parameters.

I used to dress like an Eskimo so I could go though the winter on my bike.
No more! God damn it, I am fed up to the hilt with these freaking Minnesota
winters - they are the pits and don't let anyone ever tell you any
different!

Hey, it is cold and miserable outside, then stay indoors and write messages
to ARBR! Things don't really get going here again until March - and April is
much better. Never forget, we live in NORTH America.
