Mineral oil and Mavic Ksyrium freehub maintenance
I understand that Mavic calls for mineral oil in their Ksyrium freehubs.
The question is, just exactly what is mineral oil? Are regular sewing machine oil suitable? Are baby oil from the supermarket considered to be mineral oil? Any comments? -- |

Any comments? -- I'm thinking that they're talking about something more like a GL-1 gear lube, which is immediately what I think of when you say "mineral oil." However, I'm coming from an automotive perspective so it's best to wait for a more informed response. They're typically hard to find at your FLAPS but if you have a farm and fleet, tractor supply, etc. they were commonly used in old tractor transmissions and other implements, so they are still available there. Do NOT use a gear oil with a GL-x rating where x does not equal one in any application that calls for "straight mineral oil." Typically the compatibility issues have to do with EP additives that may cause corrosion problems with some yellow metals. The only possible exception would be in a very old mechanism where the documentation was written before EP additives were introduced and you can confirm that there are no materials in the assembly that could be adversely affected by said additives (often sulfur-based compounds.) Obviously that is not the case with the freehubs to which you're referring. Like I said, I am speaking from an automotive perspective - "mineral oil" in that context generally means "GL-1 gear oil." Mavic may have something completely different in mind. Did they recommend a specific brand of lube, or simply used the words "mineral oil?" good luck nate -- replace "roosters" with "cox" to reply. http://members.cox.net/njnagel |

Mineral oil is made from alkanes; long chain fully saturated carbon an hydrogen. Not mineral oil is mostly unsaturated; sterols; esters ... some oxygens in there. -- Michael Press |

Are baby oil from the supermarket considered to be mineral oil? An addendum to my previous answer. Buy a quart of mineral oil at the pharmacy. Guaranteed no unpredictable additives. Good for whet stones and other uses around the house too. -- Michael Press |

Too bad the Mavic freehub design is so poor. The unsupported bearing and cheesy rubber seal is too much maintenance for me. I sold my Ksyriums and bought Euruses (Is that the proper plural form?) and haven't looked back. ATB oil is hard to find but there are several threads about it on the Serotta Forum. I use ATB #1 fr the chain, ATB freehub oil for hubs and ATB grease for things requiring grease. -- Mike |
