Default Data transfer from CM436 with Ciclotour

I've got a new PC _without_ serial port and I cannot transfer the data from
the CM436 bike computer by CicloSport. The problem seems to be the lack of
virtual COM ports - which cannot be there just because of the lack of a
serial
port. As a matter of fact, on my old PC (supplied with a serial port) I
never
had problems with the data transfer. Did anyone have the same problem?
Do you
know a solution?
Thanks
Riccardo

Lots of people sell converters to address exactly this kind of need.

For example:
http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/usb_serial.htm
I don't know if this one is any good, it just came out at the top of a
Google search for "usb to serial converters" -

Hope this helps,

bookieb.

Maybe I misunderstand your tip, but I think I have the opposite problem.
I do connect
the CM436 to the PC thru an USB, but the driver creates a link to a
virtual COM port:
the problem is that the COM1-8 ports do not exist on my PC. As far as I
undertsand
this is due to the fact that the PC is not equipped with a serial port.
So, I might rephrase
my question as: how can I fool windows and create a virtual COM port
without having
a real serial port?

Have you tried the updates available on the Ciclosport site?

The version I got on CD corresponds to the versions downloadable from
their web site.

The driver for a USB converter should then have a virtual serial port COM#
appear.

If you go into device manager and look at ports, somewhere in its advanced
settings you'll be able to change the number it gets assigned (I'd be
surprised if it wasn't assigned COM1, 3 or 4 already).

Beware that some of the converters cheat a little , and won't work easily on
a PC without a real serial port already. Match the COM port you assign to
the COM port it's looking for in software, and all should be well.

I was having the same trouble with a CM 436 M, but it all worked out OK
when I actually had recorded some data in the unit. Maybe that will
help you?

1. push both buttons for about 3 seconds until the mountain icon
flashes at the lower left.
2. go for a tour
3. push both buttons for three seconds, until the icon is frozen.
4. on altitude display mode, push the left button until the display
reset screen comes up, scroll through the two altitude sub-screens with
the left button, until "PC" shows.
5. quickly press both buttons again, until the data transfer initiates
on the bike computer; at this point the dashboard on the PC should show
incoming data.

good luck.

Thanks to all. Actually I solved the problem by getting a new driver for
CM436 from the local distributor. For some reason, I had an old version
of the driver (and of the Hactronic program) although the CD which came
with the CM436 contained the most recent release.
Anyway, all's well that ends well.
