Default There's more to riding than being politically-correct

People may be riding public transport in New York, but around here
everybody drives. I'm certainly not going to limit my driving so long
as nobody else is doing so. That would really be shooting myself in
the foot. Of course, I've reduced my driving due to gas prices, but
not because it's politically correct to do so.

Forget about the planet, or other people for that matter. What about
yourself? You already mentioned that you're saving $$$. Don't you feel
better after a ride? Have you ever taken a ride through town in the
morning, smelling breakfast, listening to the birds, saying hello to
people you come across... things you wouldn't notice while driving, and
thinking that life goes by at just the right speed on a bike? And then
there are the health benefits from exercise. Sure, it doesn't have to be
a bike. You could jog, you could work out at the gym, or you could just
jump on your bike and ride.

It's kind of a strange reason to not ride a bike because "nobody else"
is limiting their driving. That's pushing compliancy with social norms a
bit far, and I never really thought of going for a bike ride as rocking
the boat. Ride for yourself. Think of the health benefits. Burn calories
on a bike ride to make more room for beer & brats! Whatever.

And by the way, the American River Bike Trail is worth checking out, if
you haven't already. Sacramento is a great town for cycling.

Would I post this in rec.cars.misc? No. But this isn't rec.cars.misc.
It's rec.bicycles.misc. :-)

Mike, with all due respect, I think you're making several typical smug
cyclist assumptions.

I've been riding seriously for 40 years. I ride my bike a lot. The
point is, though, that I ride it because I want to, not because some
smug liberal tells me I should; not because I want to "save the
planet"; and not because "I want to be part of the solution, not part
of the problem."

OF COURSE

You distort my argument through your typical liberal, do-gooder prism
when you say I'm "following social norms" by driving. Wrong! I'm
simply not following the social norms of the smug liberals who want to
tell everybody else how to live. I ride my bike when I want to, and I
drive one of my cars when I want to. Nobody tells me which one I
should use!

OF COURSE I'm familiar with the American River Bike Trail! I'll bet I've ridden on it more than you have. So why would you assume that I'm not familiar with it?

Again, Mike, I refer you to the "South Park" episode entitled "Smug
Alert". These are the kinds of attitudes that make non-cyclists hate
us. You're not better than anyone else just because you ride your bike
everywhere, so you really need to dump that irritating attitude.

Must have been somebody else who said this then-

"I'm certainly not going to limit my driving so long
as nobody else is doing so."

We've all got things we prefer to do over others. You prefer driving a car
over cycling. Why make up excuses otherwise? I don't make up excuses that I
prefer to ride a bike. You think I'm "smug" about cycling. By your
definition we're all "smug" about anything we feel passionate about.

I can live with that.

=v= Yet somehow you find it so much a problem that you need
to conjure up a straw horse ("smug liberal") to sneer at,
and repost such sentiments over and over and over. The lady
doth protest too much.

=v= Introducing the chimera of peeceeness is inherently a
move away from saying anything of substance and towards the
inane attention to personality traits (imputed and imagined
ones, at that). Anyone who introduces the concept into the
discussion loses one IQ point. You might have points to
spare, as Vice President Quayle once said, "What a waste it
is to lose one's mind. Or not to have a mind is being very
wasteful. How true that is."

=v= It's pretty sad that one tepidly humorous _South_Park_
episode has provided yet another straw horse distraction
for those who want to divert attention to personality traits
(real or imagined) from anything of any substance. We now
see "smug" used where "peecee" was before, by people under
the impression that it's edgy to quote a 5-year-old teevee
show that made fun of San Francisco.

=v= In truth, the dot-com days had a devastating effect on
the socially-concerned population of San Francisco. Housing
is mostly only affordable to the likes of corporate lawyers
and the financial sector (talk about smug). That episode
was an anachronism 5 years before it aired.

"Sheesh, get over yourself, already."

WTF? You're telling other people how to live their lives, and you want
ME to get over it? Wow, the smell of your own fresh farts in the
morning must be really intoxicating!

"You think I'm "smug" about cycling. By your definition we're all
"smug" about anything we feel passionate about."

You can feel passionate about something without trying to shove it
down other peoples' throats. As a matter of fact, you can even feel
passionate about something while keeping your mouth shut! That's what
I'd recommend that you do, because the public is sick of hearing your
sanctimonious pronouncements, and it is only causing resentment on the
part of the public toward your fellow cyclists. Only "true believers"
who are insecure in their "passionate" beliefs try to force them on
other people like you smug cyclists do. Someone who is emotionally
centered and secure in his beliefs does not need to try to force other
people to accept them.

In brief, you smug cyclists are making the public hate all cyclists. I
don't want the public to lump me into the same group you're in. I
would like to be able to ride my bike without motorists thinking I am
just another smug cycling prick like you guys are, acing all holier-
than-thou because you ride a ****ing bicycle. Would you please
therefore just STFU? Thank you.

Can we have greater use of indefinite pronouns?
