Default Polluted London - motorists cause deaths in other ways than by road accidents

"London is one of the most polluted cities in Europe, with official
studies showing that air pollution – mainly from traffic – causes more
premature deaths than passive smoking and traffic accidents combined,
at a cost of about £2bn a year."

Aren't all of the drivers themselves immune though? I thought they had
filters that prevented toxic gases and particles from entering their
cages. And isn't the £2 billion that the premature deaths costs
society covered by "road tax"?

Maybe they could introduce a new special tax on cars that will mean
drivers will pay the £175m fine instead of the rest of us taxpayers
picking up the tab while not polluting the London streets ourselves.

Perhaps you could provide the name of anyone who has ever died of
passive smoking?

He died of lung cancer.
There is no evidence whatsoever that it was actually caused by "passive
smoking".
I believe that it was firstly his wife who diagnosed it as being caused by
passive smoking; a quick second opinion from the Daily Mail - and that was it -
it has become fact.

Was there an autopsy?
Did it show that his lungs were black with smoke inhalation?

I'm afraid thats the old chestnut always dragged out by the anti smoking
lobby.

Mr Castle did die from lung cancer. Lots of non smokers do.

However the lung cancer smokers die from is an entirely different form
of cancer, that affects an entirely different area of the lungs.

Smoking and Secondhand Smoke
Cigarette smoking causes lung cancer. In fact, smoking tobacco is the
major risk factor for lung cancer. In the United States, about 90% of
lung cancer deaths in men and almost 80% of lung cancer deaths in women
are due to smoking. People who smoke are 10 to 20 times more likely to
get lung cancer or die from lung cancer than people who do not smoke. The
longer a person smokes and the more cigarettes smoked each day, the more
risk goes up.

groan

Doug - a word of well-meant advice: for very shame, you are the last person
who should be trying to pooh-pooh the notion that there are two kinds of lung
cancer, when you have persistently insisted, in the face of reason, that
there are two kinds of everything else.
