Is it just our area, or has the price of a loaf of bread more than
doubled in the last three years?

I'll ask my personal shopper later today. Meanwhile, try the Value Menu.

It's the cost of wheat.

Are you perhaps a bit behind the curve on this? The big grain price
increases were late 2007 / early 2008. Now: "Falling prices emerged
as a theme in the latest economic data, with the consumer price
index recording its first annual decline in more than 50 years.
Retail sales also headed lower, surprising economists with a more
than 1% drop."

Two years ago I could get decent bread flour
for 0.9 to 1.5 $ / 5 lb.

Nowadays, I consider myself fortunate to find
All Purpose below 3.5 $ / 5 lb. Bread flour
more like 4 to 4.5.

So, I'd hazard that it's all way up.

Has it yet been officially verified that we're in a
deflationary period?

The Economists on the info media seem to like (or at
least condone) inflation, but deflation is considered
an horrible thing.

As for the current price of bread, I'd expect there'd
be some lag time, as the grain from which it's made was
probably harvested a year or two ago.

cheers,
Tom
