how do i replace a cable on handle bar twist shifters?

what do i need to know

are there special cables?

GS suggests the skinny series 1.1mm gear wires and in fact
they do seem smoother.

Remove the grip. Shift to high gear. Pull out, away from
the bike, as you shift to low gear and the lever will pop
off its capstan. There are various gear wire routes through
the lever for various models so no explicit directions after
that. Observe the gear wire path well!

If you're stumped, note the model number on the outside and
write back.
