Default Places to learn how to take care of my bike

Hi

I live in Oakland, CA and getting back into biking after a 5 year
layoff. I never did much maintenance on my bike, used friends and/
shops in the past and now would like to learn how to do maintenance,
beyond just fixing flats.

What shops/places does the group recommend around the bay area.
Thoroughness, hand on nature, and cost are key factors

Thanks

Shri

You might find a charity in your area, like (http://www.fwbaclub.org/
bikes-for-tykes.cfm) such as we have here in Ft Worth TX, where you
could learn about bicycle maintenance and repair by refurbishing bikes
that are donated to kids and people who REALLY need transportation.

Hope this helps.

Lewis.

REI often has courses.

If they still have it, the (NOT free) "Comprehensive" is much better
than the free (change a flat) course.

I've been enjoying this guy's tutorials for the past few months.
http://bicycletutor.com/
Sadly has to learn most of it the hard way the last couple of
years but still learned plenty from him. His site should be set up as
a model of simplicity and ease of navigation. The video's are clean,
clear and precise. Happy to say he's a fellow Vancouverite as well.

I've received Night School pamphlets in the post,
advertising courses in bike maintenance & repair.
I also know of at least a couple of local bike shops
that independently pitch such courses.

Unfortunately to the Original Poster, the ones of
which I know are only germain to Vancouver, not S.F.

I /do/ know that such educational opportunities
exist, and the Original Poster is not crazy for
wanting to learn stuff.

Crazy is shelling-out a hundred bux or so for
someone to tighten a bolt because one doesn't
know how to wield a spanner without killing
their knuckles. Just like calling AAA to install
your spare tire to replace your flat, when you've
already got all the stuff you need to DIY in
five minutes.

As for your question: "are you crazy," I can
only speak for myself, and I'm content with
my own life.

How 'bout you?
