In technical terms, he has an information diode installed. I.E. there
is no way that he can accept any information from the outside world.
It would disturb his worldview.

This is unlike the scientist and observer he claims to be, because
real scientists are capable of absorbing new information and modifying
their views based on observation. Mikie is monomaniacal, pretending to
be open-minded.

He will never be able to understand the damage he does to his
purported cause, because his actions have nothing to do with the
environment and everything to do with getting attention.
