Options for tubeless MTB rims
A customer has asked me to build him a set of tubeless MTB wheels. He
does not want to do a tubeless convesion through the likes of Stan's NoTubes. He wants to use a UST tubeless tyre on a proper tubeless rim. What are my options? Mavic's tubeless rim options come with special nipples that insert from the inside, leaving the inner bed without any holes. Is that the only option? How do other rim manufacturers overcome the problem with holes in the spoke bed? Johan Bornman |

How do other rim manufacturers overcome the problem with holes in the spoke bed? Johan Bornman Bontrager makes a tubeless setup using a special rim strip that plugged into the spoke holes. I believe that Shimano now makes rims that work the same way as the Mavic, where the spoke is threaded at both ends with the nipples at the hub. Rim plugs may work as well, but not sure about that. Just read this about some new Specialized rims that may be of interest, as there's apparently a UST standard which, if not followed, restricts tire choices: http://newflavors.bicycling.com/2007...lized-rov.html. Also, FWIW, most riders I know use Stans in conjunction even with proprietary tubeless rim/tire setups. AND carry an extra tube. Too bad the "Oliver's Yes Tubes" seems to be down.... /s |
