A nice page about the Rudge tandem rotary tricycle: http://www.dself.dsl.pipex.com/MUSEU...e/tricycle.htm A few examples: http://users.edpnet.be/drieww/3wielm...cle%201888.htm http://users.edpnet.be/drieww/3wielm...20Tricycle.htm http://users.edpnet.be/drieww/3wielm...t%20Tandem.htm http://users.edpnet.be/drieww/3wielm...20Tricycle.htm http://users.edpnet.be/drieww/Nottin...adster1889.htm The gallery above, with more tricycle stuff: http://users.edpnet.be/drieww/3WielMuseum.htm The obvious drawback of the side-by-side sociable is that is much wider than the in-line tandem, leading to much more wind drag and reduced agility. Uncle James Starley's tandem Salvo in the upper right: http://i6.tinypic.com/4tibe3t.jpg Most of the commercially successful rear-wheel chain-drive safety bicycles that appeared in 1884 and 1885, such as nephew John Starley's Rover, used parts from tricycles and quadricycles, which had developed chains and sprockets, remote front steering, and elaborately adjustable seating.
