Debit cards work fine for that here. No credit rating needed to get one. No credit rating to get a credit card here either, just a statement of your income etc. They do check if you have defaults, but there is no problem if you don't have any defaults. They would work here too I guess. My ATM card is technically a debit card. I used to use it for gas purchases. It worked fine until I got out of the bank's territory. It took me a while to figure out why the pump wasn't authorizing. After that I switched to another card that I use almost exclusively when traveling. |

They would work here too I guess. I know they do. But there is one downside with them there, you generally don't get any warranty extension with them there like you do with some credit cards. That isnt true here, they have the same detail on that as some credit cards here. My ATM card is technically a debit card. I used to use it for gas purchases. It worked fine until I got out of the bank's territory. Doesn't happen with our debit cards which work fine anywhere a credit card works, even out of the country. In fact they are better than credit cards which have real downside when you want to get cash from a checkout instead of using an ATM. We do also have what you call an ATM card, we call those EFTPOS cards but they don't get used anything like as much now although they have just been added to apple pay and google pay now, here. It took me a while to figure out why the pump wasn't authorizing. After that I switched to another card that I use almost exclusively when traveling. I now use a credit card almost exclusively for everything except actually getting cash at other than an ATM. I don't use ATMs much at all anymore except like when I needed to deposit a big wad of cash when the neighbour's kid who I used to be the personal banker for showed up with enough $100 notes to buy an iphone X with and got me to buy it online for him so he could have it with him when he went to visit his relatives as he usually did most school holidays, in the state capital. The ATMs here allow you to stuff a great wad of notes into the machine and it will count them and put them in your bank account. Much more convenient than going into the physical bank now. |

Decades ago we had a problem with Access (now Mastercard) and Visa credit cards, some worked in some places, some in others. Now everything works everywhere. Cash cards were the same, two concurrent incompatible systems, but now work together. I simply have one card. It's a cash card and a debit card in one. I can use it to withdraw cash at any ATM anywhere in the world, make an online payment anywhere in the world, and buy from a shop or gas station anywhere in the world. It's got a Visa logo on it. |

Most of my taxes pay for things I don't use, like schools, libraries, hospitals, etc. All those things should be pay per use. |

rbowman wrote Jimmy Wilkinson Knife wrote rbowman wrote Why do you need a credit rating if you buy everything in cash? Credit cards. Try getting a hotel room, renting a car, and so forth without one. Works fine there and here with debit cards. I only changed to using a credit card for all but backup for when I hadn't managed to ensure I had enough cash in the accounts with debit card to pay for some transaction, because its easier to have the card automatically paid off in full every month from the account where I keep the bulk of my cash, where it earns the highest interest. They are also handy at the gas pump Debit cards work fine there. although I did see one yesterday that accepted cash. It didn't make change though so if you put in $20 and only could pump in $18.57 worth of gas you had to go inside. Our pumps allow you to specify how much you want to pay and deliver that amount of petrol. I assume you mean when paying by cash. I've never seen a cash pump in the UK. I use a debit card, I put it in first, then it charges me for however much gas I take. Credit card gas pumps were a great innovation. It used to be if the gas station closed when the sun went down you were screwed. I've slept in the car a couple of times waiting for someone to open up. Yes, but they work just as well with debit cards. In the UK, they both use Visa/Mastercard. So a debit card will work absolutely anywhere a credit card will. In fact it's better as it doesn't charge the shop so much percentage, so small shops prefer them. Some small shops add a fee if I buy with a credit card. |

Many are ****ing idiots that are living beyond their means. 50% of most people's outgoings are their mortgage. Land is too damn expensive, because we're vastly overpopulated. We're not actually buying anything real, just the right to use a bit of land. Did anyone have a gun at their head to force them to buy a house they can't afford? Hardly anybody starts out life with enough money to buy a house. Almost everyone has to borrow. I'd never have kids unless I could buy them at least a small house outright. |
