Default Gauze fix for a busted tire

Yesterday it happened again, a tire ruptured and left a gash of an inch
right in the running surface. I still had 17mi to go and the first aid
kit contained the fix: A roll of gauze. I removed the rear brake so it
wouldn't tangle there. Unfortunately the gauze rubbed off the paint
inside the stays behind the BB. Spray paint fixed that. The frame is
blue and I only had gray but, oh well. This is how it looked at the end
of the 17mi:

It held! Also, a hooray for thick thorn-resistant tubes and tire liners.
Without those I wouldn't have made it back riding.

I hope this idea helps someone else. Just be careful with only one brake.

I'm glad you made it home. I was wondering with all the bad luck you have why you don't carry a spare tire. With all the stuff you already carry with you the volume of a foldable tire can't be a problem.

When you home you can take it off and fold it back to put it in one of you bags again. Just an idea.

Back in the days of "sew up" tires many people carried one or more
spare tires folded and tied under the rear of the seat.

And why not boot the tire from the inside? I've had giant gashes that I've booted with a poly Power Bar or Cliff Bar wrapper or a folded dollar bill -- or both. And if you're bringing gauze, why not duct tape (if not a spare tire).

+1

Actually Canadian money is now plastic so it works even better for booting
a split in a tire.

I think you guys may be missing the point. Given Joerg's previous
history of posts:

1) Nothing anyone proposes will work for Joerg, except what Joerg says
has already worked for Joerg.

2) The surgical gauze Joerg used was not carried by him. He conveniently
found it by the side of the trail, where he gets his rocks and nails for
chain repair.

3) And it was probably on the rotting corpse of someone who rode on a
(gasp!) ordinary road without (shudder!) a 10,000 lumen headlamp plus
taillight running in the daytime.

Make sure it's aircraft grade duct tape.

I changed over to just wearing one:

Folded under a saddle, they're easy to forget such that the
creases and wear on the edges are a problem

That's true but since the spare tires you take with you have been previously used the tubular glue pulls all of the wool jerseys apart. Under the saddle they have no such handicap.

I have done that once. I can't remember the occasion but what I do remember is that it was quite comfortable.
