Just to let you all know that tomorrow night (22.01.04 5:30pm-7pm) is
the first meeting of the wiltshire cycling forum its free to attend.

Its been set up by wiltshire county council, in partnership with west
wilts district council and will be meeting four times a year at county
hall trowbridge.

I only found out today but im planning to go and put the view of a 21
year old road biker.

It would be great if I could meet some of the u.r.c. crew there and lets
give the council what for.

Cheers

Michael

Free? I should bloody well hope so.

Go for it. As I've said before, unless cyclists get involved with
councils we will continue to see abysmal levels of useful
consideration and provision for cyclists.

Don't regard the forum as an end in its own right; see it as your
opportunity to find out how the council works, when the planning and
transportation meetings are and who the key players are. Some cycle
forums are simply safe talking shops where trouble makers can be
ring-fenced, letting the highways dept get on with the real business
of removing impediments to the fastest possible flow of motor traffic.

Another problem with forums (fora?) is that because they are limited
in time (6 hours a year in your example), they deal in strategy and
broad brushstrokes. This is not always useful for cycling where the
devil really is in the detail of each scheme.

Also, don't regard it as "giving the council what for". You will get
bored and achieve nothing. Make notes and be prepared to follow up
with letters, emails, phone calls to chase any committments.

Good luck.

Good luck in attending. It *should* be free however - don't think of that as a
plus point - it *should* be free. One point I'd raise if I was going there (but
shan't be as I'm in an entirely different county...) is the timing. 5.30pm -
many a cyclist is at work or just on the point of leaving. This choice of
timing means that it effectively disbars a lot of cyclists the opportunity to
attend.

Cheers, helen s

I take it that this excludes the unitary authority of Swindon, which
manages to screw the roads up all by itself?

Have weekly meetings until you've got their cycling strategy document
hammered out.

I've applied for a job in Swindon. A cyclable commute will be
essential - I'll be on the Councils' backs if need be.
