Default MTB hubs on roadbike?

Heyhey!

In general, will mtb quick release hubs fit in to a roadframe which also has
quick release hubs? i.e. is the frame spacing the same for all quick
release. And then more specifically will the modern spacing be the same as
my roadbike from the mid-80's? (i'm unable to physically check).

Thanks

Looks like front hubs might fit, back likely not. Check out
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/frame-spacing.html for the full story. This
was the top link Google returned with "hub spacing".

Front, yes
Back, no

Back mtb hub spacing is 135mm. road spacing today is 130mm. In the
eighites it used to be 126 mm. So, a rear mtb hub will not work on a
road bike. Saorry,

Default MTB hubs on roadbike? - Shimano 126mm replacement axel.

Thanks both. okay, okay, so usually i read sheldons stuff, good stuff, but
sometimes you just want somebody to tell you the answer! :P

Anyway, i need a 126mm rear hub. I'd like a brand new one but struggling to
locate them, any idea where i can get these (UK shops preferably)? do they
still make them?

thanks

How about checking with your local bike shop? They might still have
126mm rear hubs.

Otherwise, try ebay. You are probably not going to be able to find
126mm rear cassette hub, but freewheel ones should be available.

A few more UK sources

Campyoldy:

Mercian Cycles
http://www.merciancycles.com

You should be able to find something. Good Luck!

I assuming you want a freehub that accepts a cassette, not a hub which
accepts a thread on freewheel(?).If that's the case, any used or NOS
hubs which came from the factory with 126mm spacing will be either 7SP
or 6SP.

What's the rest of the story? Do you have 7SP shifters? What is the
frame made of?

If you read down the page a bit, Sheldon also tells you how to spread
the frame. I'm guessing an 1980s bike will be steel, and it'll be a
good choice for spreading the frame for a wider hub. (Unlike carbon
or aluminum frames!)

Sometimes there are washers on the left side, which can be removed to
give the narrower spacing. If the axle remains too long you can cut it.

If that won't work, there are plenty of old hubs around.

Nope. MTB 135mm and road 130mm, generally.
