It does not look much smaller folded than unfolded.

Yeah, it's hard to tell from the views. If it flattens enough to fit in
a brief case or back pack there are probably people that would buy it.

"There are people that would buy it" is a long, long way from either "It
makes practical sense" or "It will be a commercial success."

I'm betting on production lasting as long as the average Hollywood
marriage, if that.

But if they could sell it for the activity that has about three times as
many fatal head injuries per mile as cycling, that might help.

That "dangerous" activity is, of course, being a pedestrian.

According to the makers of a new folding bicycle helmet on sale in Central London:

"The main reason why urban cyclists take the risk of not wearing a helmet is the inconvenience of carrying it when not on the bike. Overade's patented and very innovative folding helmet permits it to store very easily but without forgetting comfort and security. Smart and easy to use, the helmet folds and unfolds in seconds. A great innovation that will make it appealing for all urban cyclists."

Other details scavenged from the ad:

* Well Ventilated: 14 vents
* Common Sizing: S/M (54-58cm) - L/XL (59-62cm); adjustable straps
* Materials: Outer ABS Hardshell | Internal Shell: EPS with comfort foam padding
* Uses: All types of cycling, Skateboarding, Roller Skating and Kick Scooters

Available in black and white, no pastels.

Except the inconvenience factor is not alone. Helmet hair for the
ladies is a right turnoff, and for some of the gents as well, and in hot
climates excessive head temperatures are also a consideration.

I don't see this product making it far.

I suspect that the price tag of A$160 might be a bit of a turn off too
:-)

There are a lot of cyclists around here. There are a lot of people
using Bixis. (Too bad the idiots running it can't figure out how to
make it profitable but that's par for the course around here - they
still sell out the bikes)

People have actually complained about having to carry their own helmets
so I think they could get some sales here. Sure, it would be a niche
market. Maybe they could hook up with the city of Montreal to sell them
some large quantity or work out some licensing deal.

I don't actually see this particular product making it far, either, because it doesn't fold small enough. But I think it could have a certain vogue among the trendy under-thirties, including women with expensively styled casual hair who would take a little helmet rearrangement as an in-group marker.

Imagine prototypes are on the shelf...

Here's what appears to be a smaller folder.

Still not terrifically convinced.

If I had to go topless for some unimaginable reason, I'd prefer the airbag you wear around your neck until Der Tag arrrives. See the contemporary thread:

Choice is good. Security is better. Once I would have been outraged by such a dichotomy.
