3:26 is simply incredible. Same for LZVM and Mactier.

Ulmer's splits were : 1:12.8, 6.9, and 6.6 I don't see any reason why

she
couldn't easily break 4:40 for a 4k.

Anybody know what the environmental conditions were during qualifying?

Mactier smoked the first k in 1:10.6

Still hasn't learned, has she? ;-)

Our local NBC station says they're showing track cycling between
12:30am-2:00 am tonight. Also saw a mention that track cycling may be
on prime time tonight. Since they tend to show only cycling finals it
will probably be the Team Sprint.

Thanks for the heads up on the racing tonight, Warren. I would not have
known otherwise.

Well since you're being nice about it, the local NBC station is
supposed to show more cycling (pursuit?) at 12:30 am Monday (Sunday
night). How am I supposed to recover from racing and training if I'm
watching cycling at midnight?!

Hey, I'm always nice about it! I did just see the team sprint final.
Germany wins, but Japan looked pretty good. It looked like the German guy
who started in the gate lurched about 4 inches forward before he started
pedaling.

They also just showed Brad v. Brad in the 4k pursuit. It looked like
McGee would be able to pull back the early time loss but he just didn't
have it in him. But he's had a pretty respectable season so far.

None that I am aware of. However, there is at least one paper indicating
that starting as fast as Mactiear does is likely costing her time:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q..._uids=10668763

Since the results of this modeling study are consistent with both known
physiology as well as actual practice, I don't see any reason to question
it. That's particularly true since based on reports it appears that Mactier
has been sticking to her guns and not even experimenting with different
pacing strategies.

Just watching the replay again....almost looked like Sarah tried
deliberately to blow the Aussie up...she had an even faster start than
Mactier, dropped back to +0.9 at the first kilo and then just took off
after 1500 and took 3 seconds in 1km. Listen to her breathing at the
end of the warm down laps - totally on the limit.

I noticed that too. Impressive. I've got three weeks to work on that
move for myself.

She thought there was a sprinter's time bonus sprint on the fourth lap.

With the incredible times being ridden on the track, does anyone els
suspect the Athens velodrome might be shorter than 250m

I'd be pretty surprised if the UCI and IOC don't go out and measure the
track before it gets used for a big event.
