I use a mountain bike for everyday travel to/from most local
merchants. The extra suspension of a mountain bike and street tires
allows moderate transitions off pavement to avoid pedestrians and
usage of sidewalks(Legal in Florida). It's been optimized for an
urban environment, with thinner street(1.5") tires, nose less seat,
and extra nighttime illumination.

Now for the benefits of regular bicycling.

Longer life span. (Extended workouts slows down the aging process by
up to 33%).
Much better fitness levels and lower blood pressure.
Healthier move active lifestyle.
More efficient food utilization. (Reduced food inputs needed to
maintain desired healthy weight range.)

One of the lowest carbon emission alternatives to all other forms of
travel. (600+ MPG equivalent)

Too bad so many mountain bikers are too crippled -- or dead -- to
enjoy them.... Go ahead, keep trying to sweep the FACTS under the rug!

No one is objecting to such use of a mountain bike. Mountain bikes also come
in handy on the hundreds of miles of gravel roads here in southern
Minnesota. What is objectionable is riding a mountain bike on a hiking
trail.

A recumbent bicycle will insure that you keep cycling even longer than you
would on an upright bicycle. Comfort becomes important as you age.

Uh, Mr. Ed Dolan, your buddy Mike Vandeman does object, considering his
history of posting negative stories about mountain bike use in urban
settings in the past.

Please pay attention.

YOU are the one who doesn't pay attention or lies. I've never objected
to the use of mountain bikes on pavement. That's where they belong.
But it's STUPID to ride a mountain bike on pavement, because a road
bike is optimized for street use. Sorry about all the big words. Ask
your mommie to explain them to you.

Don't be absurd. No one in this world is objecting to the use of mountain
bikes on streets and roads. The fat tires and more upright sitting position
make for perfect sense on rough streets and roads. In fact, most week long
group bike tours will have almost as many mountain bikes as road bikes.

I once used a mountain bike (a Schwinn High Sierra) to go from Colorado to
Minnesota. It worked better than a road bike because I was carrying a heavy
load and was often on gravel roads. Road bikes do not work at all on gravel
roads because of the narrow tires. There is especially a lot to be said for
fat knobby tires when you are on dirt and gravel roads, which is often the
case once you get outside the town limits here in southern Minnesota.
