Default Fears for cyclist riding behind lorry at Plymouth roundabout

QUOTE:
A cyclist caught on camera riding around a busy Plymouth roundabout has sparked a debate around the safety of their manoeuvre.

The footage was captured by a concerned passenger in a car travelling behind the bicycle near Charles Cross Roundabout in the city centre.

PlymouthLive contacted a local cycling group to ask more about roundabout safety and it appears that many are on the side of the cyclist, believing he was riding in a safe manner.

Whilst the passenger who shot the footage was concerned about the distance between the cyclist and the vehicle in front, others have hailed the cyclist for their sensible behaviour.

You can watch the video at the top of this page and make your own judgement on what happened.

Busy roundabout junctions can be a dangerous place for inexperienced cyclists and drivers.

Driving laws stipulate motorists should be aware that when moving past a cyclist on the road the recommended distance between them and a moving vehicle is 1.5 metres.

If a car is caught to be within this recommended distance the driver can face a fine of up to £100 and points on their license (SIC).

But what about cyclists?

The official Highway Code gives clear guidance for cyclists who are riding around a roundabout.

It states: "Give plenty of room to long vehicles on the roundabout as they need more space to manoeuvre. Do not ride in the space they need to get round the roundabout.

"It may be safer to wait until they have cleared the roundabout."

It is equally important that a cyclist consider (SIC) blind spots when out on the road.

Blind spots can be a particular issue for driver's (SIC) of larger vehicles such as lorries.

It is important that both drivers and cyclists consider the safety of others on the road.

Whether you think this cyclist was in the right or the wrong, it is important that all road user's (SIC) are aware of the guidelines and laws.

Which "driving laws" make these "stipulations"?

Act and/or Statutory Instrument, please?
