Default road rage in LA (w/ physician driver)

Don't know if this was mentioned here on bike.wreck earlier:
http://laist.com/2008/07/07/road_rag...lists_on_m.php

The follow up (with gruesome photos):
http://laist.com/2008/07/07/update_o...e_accident.php

I know LA is a weird place but there's no accounting for this kind of
behavior.

Youch! We had an incident here between two drivers a few years back.
In this case, Driver A (also a physician, which is what reminded me)
leaped out of his car and punched Driver B through her open window. We
also have had several incidents of road rage by drivers towards cyclists
including running a group ride off the road and an incident of suspected
road rage resulting in the death of the cyclist, but the perpetrator was
never identified.

Man, thinking about that some more- those guys were really clipping
down the hill when this asshole jammed on his brakes. That was a hard
impact. Brrrr.

Think about this - if he had gotten out and quietly helped the injured man
and kept his mouth shut the courts probably wouldn't have gotten involved!
The only thing we have going for us out there is the fact that more cops are
riding bikes these days to maintain physical fitness.

I was run off the road by a California Highway Patrolman who then drove
rapidly away before I could get his number.

Actually, city cops around here are being trained as bicycle cops now. A
larger city has set up a training center and is rotating not only cops
from their own city, but cops from other local cities through the
training program. To be a bicycle cop most cities require training from
that school. What with the price of gas, more cities are using bicycle
cops, so it feeds through pretty well.

This is really helping matters. Once they have been to that school, most
of them "see the light" and can quote the law chapter and verse tempered
with some reason, such as, "Nothing says you have to put your foot down
at a stop sign, but if I see you blow through a light, you are getting a
ticket!"

Rough justice.

I hope that they will sue that asshole for all that he has.
Specifically his retirement stash. Assault with deadly weapon
that's what it is. Or better yet sentence him to 10 years pro
bono work in some community clinic where he can help some poor.

Vehicular assault is a felony in California. Wonder about back there...

When I read "The driver of the vehicle stopped his car and
continued the tirade, identifying himself as a Doctor but never
offering medical attention." I had to wonder if the perpetrator
wasn't just a normal guy who'd been working ungodly-long hours
and taking some kind of drug to stay awake. It seemed sooooo
irrational... especially the stopping after committing the act
and continuing to rant.

LA is not a particularly wierd place to bike.

The behavior does sound irrational/adulterated. It would be best to
wait for the judicial system to work out the facts...
