A cyclist has been injured after being hit by a bus just three days into new rules designed to make cycling into Hull safer.

The bus is believed to have hit the rider at just before midday on Wednesday, close to the Spring Bank junction.

Beverley Road's bus lanes are two of a number in the city that have been given new regulations this week meaning cars are banned for the duration of the working day.

The rules were designed to promote more people cycling in the city and to allow it to be done safely.

However, one cyclist has already had to be taken to hospital after a collision.

Police cars and vans had to block the outbound side of the busy road close to a pedestrian crossing.

Providing an update on their involvement, a spokeswoman for Humberside Police said: "We were called at 11.50am to reported of a cyclist to report a road traffic collision between a bus and a cyclist on Beverley Road .

"The cyclist has been taken to hospital for treatment to what are thought to be minor injuries."

The new rules were put in place ahead of an expected spike in people wanting to cycle with some wanting to avoid public transport in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Rules have also been changed on the likes of Holderness Road, Spring Bank, Ferensway and Anlaby Road with bolt-down curbs and new markings to be put in place.

The plans had already been drawn up for Covid-19 struck the UK, however, they were accelerated to make travelling into and out of the city safer.
