Arrest after cyclist found unconscious with head injuries in hit and run

A 19-year-old man is in a serious condition after he was found unconscious near a bus stop in Weybridge.

He was found next to his bicycle, seriously injured with head wounds in Barnes Wallis Drive, shortly before 11.30pm on Friday (July 24).

Emergency services including the air ambulance rushed to the scene after a car that police believe may also have been involved had not stopped.

As a result of early enquiries, an 18-year-old man from Chertsey has been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of an accident and causing serious injury by dangerous driving, police say.

A red Volkswagen polo has been seized for forensic examination.

A Surrey Police spokesperson said: "Crews from South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) and the air ambulance attended, and the man was taken to hospital by land, where he is now conscious but his condition is described as serious."

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the incident, or the red VW Polo or the man riding the bicycle, in and around the Brooklands industrial estate in the minutes before the crash.
