Near Miss of the Day 447: Left-hook fail or Must Get In Front?

Had this happen to me a few times!

The road.cc reader who sent in today's video featured in our Near Miss of the Day series raises an interesting point - are we looking at a failed left-hook, or is it just another case of a driver who Must Get In Front of a cyclist but decided to abandon the manoeuvre?

From the footage, sent in by Dave in Dorset, we suspect it's the former, with the motorist aiming to get into the gap between him and the two riders in front to turn left, before deciding better of it and hanging back.

By contrast, there is nothing in the video to suggest that the driver had second thoughts because of another vehicle coming the other way, or a motorist looking to turn onto the road.

The driver started indicating left as they came along side the bike in front of the camera, despite there being no oncoming traffic, so were definitely about to try and turn left but their route was blocked by the riders. Seemed to be very poor judgement by the driver unless they were a toursit (SIC) that didn't know the roads and suddenly saw the brown signs for Lulworth and were caught out. Either way the result could've been pretty bad so it's a relief to see that they backed out of it rather than trying to carry on regardless with the maneuver.
