I am a Democrat, but I would not write a line like the above. I don't think
you should, either. Do you think any Republican is going to read that and
switch parties?

Yes they were created by different legislation. But they are
intertwined at the political level. And $'s are the most fungible of any
commodity so my idea is that massive increases in one area will always
put pressures in another.

Besides the point is really the societal costs of obesity so quibbling
over which Title foots the bill is not the relevant question.

Did you see the news report regarding our nations children. It is
estimated that this generation of children will be the first generation
to fail to live longer than their parents generation. Their lifestyle,
eating habits and obesity puts them at greater risk for health
problems. That really saddened me. I cannot understand how anyone can
allow their children to eat fast food and play x-box after school. It
boggles my mind. Do they even care about physical activity in this hi
tech world of computer games and Surround Sound.

It's not just your side of the pond, Maggie. Over here on this side we have
a similar problem - but apparently not quite as bad as the USA... yet. There
is a big drive by one of our "celebrity chefs", Jamie Oliver, to improve
school dinners, which are currently pretty much junk food: saturated fat
crap. Then there's the more sedentary lifestyle of our kids. I've had other
parents tell me they think I am a bad parent because I allow my son to cycle
to college... My son happens to be a slim, fit 16-year-old. To many aren't.

Cheers, helen s

I don't quite understand your point as your comments contradict
themselves. Your first sentence says that fast food and playing x-box
are not the problem. Then you say the problem is poor quality food and
not enough exercise.
To me the first sentence is the same as yor second. Fast food is poor
quality food and the implication of x-box play is that it substitutes
for exercise.
So... .

You can play X-box and get enough exercise. It's when you play x-box and
don't get exercise that the problem occurs.

But the obese will die earlier, as opposed to the thin people, who will
live and really suck the money out of the coffers.

Of course! !
That is why I used the word "implication" So, its possible but let's
face reality. Kids are getting really fat. That means that overall they
are getting too much food and too little exersize. Why quibble over
what is possible when the reality of what is gets better and better
documentation. This is a problem of what's happening to many kids and
the cultural forces that are fostering the change. Arguing about some
kids who play x box but also eat well and get exersize is not the
point.

While this could be factors, another major factor is that parents don't let
their kids walk or ride their bikes these days. WIWAK, the only reason why
you got a ride to school in your parent's car was when you were sick and had
to be picked up early from school. Everyone walked or rode their bikes,
except few who came in the school bus.

One of these schlockumentaries on the box the other day highlighted a
woman who drove her daughter to the school bus stop which was actually
visible in shot as they interviewed her outside her front door. It
can't have been more than a couple of hundred yards away.

But would you rather contribute to a program to partially fund
retirement of healthy productive folks or to pay for the medial costs
of folks who have literally made themselves sick. And I'm not sure that
the social security costs for someone living healthy until 85 aren't
less than the medical costs of someone who is disabled and has several
heart attacks and strokes before dying.
I know how I feel on the issue.

I am a republican. I'm entitled to be ****ed off at the retards who
have hijacked my party.

The reason I am not a democrat is because that group seems to be
overwhelmingly populated with whiners that would cry about what I
wrote.

Sooner or later, we'll either eject the idiots who dont believe in
evolution because it hasn't acutally happened to their families yet,
and get the republican party back to what it used to be.... or we'll
all defect to the libertarians... but I sure won't be switching parties
to the democratic party anytime soon... now go cry into an Andrea
Dworkin book.
