Not true - blue rectangular "cyclists dismount" signs have no power in law.

It's a wonder how I managed to cycle to and from work for 15 years.
I carried food, i-pod, camera, wallet, water and clothes without a bag.

You ought to have read the Highway Code, which advises against such
things.

It's funny that you like citing that publication when you don't even
know what it says.

I assume you are referring to rule 66 of the Highway Code, and it says
nothing of your obtuse utterance!
However, if you got another version of your "Code" I would be pleased to
learn.

Rules for cyclists...

[colwyn's carefully selected list of irrelevance justifiably snipped]

The bit to which I was referring is:

QUOTE:
Rule 66
You should
- [ ... ]
- [ ... ]
- [ ... ]
- not ride close behind another vehicle
- not carry anything which will affect your balance or may get tangled
up with your wheels or chain
- be considerate of other road users, particularly blind and partially
sighted pedestrians. Let them know you are there when necessary, for
example, by ringing your bell if you have one. It is recommended that a
bell be fitted.
ENDQUOTE

See the bit about not carrying "anything which will affect your balance"?

Go on - try to insist that slinging an Asda shopping bag onto your
handlebars won't affect your balance. You might be able to convince
yourself, possibly.

I'll let the two of you argue that one out between yourselves.

Simon's version does seem to reflect reality though - many cyclists do
not routinely obey the Highway Code.

And they don't have much display respect for the Road Traffic Acts
either, though they exhibit a fine show of indignity at the mere thought
of a driver taking anything like the same approach.

As an aside, does the Highway Code say to cycle in the middle of the lane?
Michael Collins maintains it does but I can't find it.

Centre of gravity raised.

Of course, science doesn't affect cyclists.

Depends on the weight and how secure it is. Your personal experience
does not follow for everybody.

And?

Of course, science doesn't affect cyclists.

Proper science does. Nugent science doesn't.

I used a giant rucksack for shopping and stored loads in it.

I use two large panniers and a rucksack. Asda do not provide a bypass
round the car park to reach their cycle racks. Just as I have never seen
one at any other shop.

They're usually right next to the front doors as well.

Nugent cares little for the laws of Momentum (until he has to stop
unexpectedly, of course)

Bah, and indeed, Humbug.
