First cycles for London bike hire scheme produced
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/e...on/8698624.stm
First cycles for London bike hire scheme produced The cycles will have three-speed gears and dynamo-powered lights The first cycles which will be used in a bike-hire scheme in London have come off the production line in Canada. The cycles will feature three-speed gears, a bell, a basket and are being fitted with dynamo-powered lights. The 6,000 bikes, which will be rolled out in London from 30 July, are being produced in a factory in Bagotville. People will be able to access the bikes 24 hours a day from 400 docking stations in nine boroughs and several Royal Parks in central London. 'Pedal power' Cyclists will have to pay a £1 "access fee", but the first 30 minutes will be free. The bikes are being produced in Canada It will then cost another £1 for up to an hour, £4 for 90 minutes, £6 for two hours and £50 for 24 hours. TfL hopes the hire scheme, which emulates similar schemes in Europe, Montreal and Boston, will generate an extra 40,000 cycle trips a day. London Mayor Boris Johnson said: "What we are creating is not just a cycle hire scheme, but a new form of public transport of the greenest and healthiest of kinds. "It will become the cornerstone of the cycling revolution in the capital and will, I'm sure, convert legions of people to the pleasures of pedal power." The cycle hire scheme will be available in Camden, Hackney, Lambeth, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Westminster, City of London and the Royal Parks. |

Fooking ridiculous, £50 for 24 hours??? You might as well buy a bike and sling it in a skip when you have finished. Crap bikes, a total waste of money and unaffordable unless you are a toff. Fukcing waste of money, typical of government spending. |

Oh good. Not only a waste of taxpayers money, but a job export. And shipping them from Canada is environmentaly friendly? SNIP The bikes are being produced in Canada It will then cost another £1 for up to an hour, £4 for 90 minutes, £6 for two hours and £50 for 24 hours. And whay kind of halfwit is going to pay that? Wait for the whinging gits to start complaining about all the extra accidents. Isn't that a list of looney left councils? -- Dave - intelligent enough to realise that a push bike is a kid's toy, not a viable form of transport. |

I suspect not - I don't think any docking stations were planned outside the central area when I looked at the list sometime ago. However, now that it is planned to give Boris control of the Royal Parks (and he has apparently committed to backing down on the proposals for car parking charges in them) it won't be long before the bikes appear in Phase II ? |

Or perhaps they've produced a pricing structure that deliberately discourages people holding onto a bike for the whole day - the first couple of half-hours cost you a quid each, then each subsequent half hour generally costs more than the one before - the sixth half hour will cost you five quid. 24 different one-hour hires will be cheaper than a single 24-hour hire. You can't keep the bike longer than 24 hours. -- |\ /| no .sig |o o| |/ \| |

It is a badly thought out attempt to appease the yoghurt knitters and is being done with public money. A more cost effective way of dealing with the problem would be to tell the yoghurt knitters to take a hike. Take a look at how many of the rental bikes have to be replaced each year through vandalism and theft - try the Vélib system in Paris http://www.independent.co.uk/news/wo...e-1826456.html Worse than this, if they were determined to fritter away taxpayers money, they should have used british manufacturers to knock the things out.It shows a very bad example of how not to administer this sort of farce! |
