:: Yeah, they're fine, just really boring. I hardly ever use mine, I
:: prefer to ride outdoors in whatever weather. I spent a lot of time
:: putting together the clothing and equipment though, and that's not a
:: trivial effort (or expense) here in New England.
::
:: The only way I can do trainers is to watch TV, for long, low

:: doesn't permit ouside riding and my body is craving some work. My

::
:: My requirements are that a trainer be quiet, and stow away easily and

:: Before investing in more expensive stuff, you might go the low cost

::

::
:: I don't think you really need a separate set of wheels, it's just
:: one more thing to have to mess with. Trainers can be tough on tires,
:: but I use pretty inexpensive ones anyway.
::
:: My favorite bike for the trainer is my fixed gear. I give up the
:: ability to change load with shifting, but I gain the ability to
:: pedal backwards -- which is fun, I don't know why. It also gives you
:: that no-coast, flywheel effect of a gym stationary bike. I control
:: effort with cadence after initially setting the resistance level on
:: the unit. For hard workouts, I choose music tempos. I have made
:: several MP3 lists that have tempo "profiles", with varying changes
:: in pace. I find that to be a surprisingly good way to set the level
:: of the workout. My biggest problem with gym "spin" classes is being
:: burdened with somebody else's taste in music.

Good stuff, Peter. Everything you say is making a lot of sense in my head.
Thanks. I do have that iPod and I can make playlist, even though i don't
plan to bring the bike inside.

For a final question, what do you think about rollers?

In honesty, I've never tried them. I was turned off by the storage issue,
the expense, and the fact I couldn't watch TV while using them.

I'm heading out to get myself a trainer that's on sale at Performance,
$200bucks, with a special (yeah, right) padded wheel that minimizes wheel
wear. The nice thing about Performance is that they take stuff back no
questions asked, especially if they have problems, even if you've had it
for a week.

Fortunately they have two mag/fluid trainers set up in the front of the
store so you can try them and see if you like the 'feel'. It's way nicer
than a stationary bike. I'll probably end up getting a road bike and
dedicate my 7500FX to the trainer.

Please let me know what you get.....it's hard to ignore spending $200 as
opposed to $800 on a spin bike (w/ shipping).

Most ppl that are big on trainers swear by the Cycle Ops 2 Fluid Trainer, I
believe. This seems to have the best reviews on roadbikereview.com: Note
the comments on the resistance being quite solid.

Best way would be to visit your local Performance bike shop if you have one
in your area and test ride. I didn't make a decision today, but all of
their models look decent and the clerk said they've had no returns on any
of them as of last month.

Oops, correction... $219. "Performance TravelTrac Mag Force Plus Trainer
w/Display". "Soft Trac" roller is easier on tires, Reg price $259.

I still say get the rollers...

I have been on mine about 8 times now...very addictive...tons of sweating and
hard breathing. It's so smooth, it[s got to be good for rehabbing you knees,
etc.

Performance has a cheap pair for like 160 bucks. The take up zero space,
they're flat and foldable.

You can watch TV, some people even ride no handed and clipped in.

After about 3-4 tries it becomes easy.

I recently started taking spin classes and am enjoying it - Of course
it does not beat riding the outdoor trails. I've tried the trainer in
the past but was no comparison to me with the spin bike.
Does anyone know any good resources for picking up a used spin bike?
Also, are there any particular brands to avoid?
