Default right front...shifting

Has anyone ever tried to swap pieces between a pair of integrated
brake-shift levers so that the right shifts the front derailleur and
vice versa?

I don't think you'll have much luck with that, but it works fine with
friction thumbshifters. If they have index detents, and you want
indexed shifting, you can swap sides and mount them underneath the
bar. Bar-end shifters are similarly versatile.

Brifters take away a lot more options than they give you in return.

There was an article (on CampyOnly.com?) about a guy with a prosthetic
right hand who modified a left Ergo lever to shift the rear, and he
used a bar-end for the front. I think it required some extensive re-
machining of the shift disc, IIRC. It's possible, but per this guy,
was not a simple thing.

The only way I can imagine this to be possible is with bar-end shifters
or friction thumbies as mentioned by Chalo.

There's a guy round here with a similar situation (prosthetic hand).
He put both levers on the left hand side, left hand lever in the
normal position, right hand lever "upside-down", but located right at
the end of the drop, so the brake lever was curving back up towards
the other normally positioned brake lever.
It's a bit hard to picture, but the tips of the brake levers were
about 2cm apart.
He could operate both brake levers and all four shifiting movements
with his left hand. He'd added a "fake" brake hood to the RHS for
riding in the hoods.

Worked fine for him.

To the OP - you could change to bullhorn bars and invert the brake
levers, but TBH, best bet would be barcons or DT levers.

Regards,

bookieb.

That sounds like a really elegant solution - Much moreso than using a
cable doubler to control both brakes with one lever.
