I didn't count helmets because I was so ****ed off by all the cyclists. Before the bike lane, there was a painted fog line, no shoulder and fast traffic -- not a road for the timid, but still my most direct commute route. Then we got the swanky bike lane, but still no riders because commuting from the southwest meant a nice climb home -- or because the Bohemians had sequestered themselves on the eastside. Anyway, it was like having my own facility for a good ten years. Then a few people started showing up. Now I have to pick my way through a f****** parade, at least relatively speaking. It's still no where near Amsterdam or the traffic over the Hawthorne Bridge. But if I had to deal with Amsterdam-like bicycle traffic, I would go crazy. I now return you to your helmet thread, which is still in progress . . . Related: http://www.kimharding.net/blog/?p=1631 It is like the people comming back from a holiday and telling that it was nice except for all those f*cking tourists. You should come over and ride bike here. It's more like missing the old days of low traffic -- bike and car. Voluntary crowd scenes are a different deal. I have no expectation of solitude when doing the Bridge Pedal, for example. In fact, I don't do that ride anymore because it is just too much of a crowd scene. http://tinyurl.com/mxemtpw And my son kind of grew out of it. BTW, for Muzi, I was at the last game at the old Yankee stadium (or second to the last). They were playing Boston and went in to extra innings. The crowds weren't too bad. On my way out, though, I almost slipped in a giant pool of vomit someone left on an interior ramp. The subway was crowded with people and rats. That city could use a serious steam cleaning. -- Jay Beattie. |

I'm glad to see all the cyclists but riding with them is not much fun. Too many inexperienced riders in close quarters. Last time I did it, it seemed that there were crashes at the foot of every hill. snip |

I wouldn't be surprised if it's an inborn trait, something built into people to enhance variety in the gene pool. My guess is, that's the reason women's fashion changes so rapidly. Women (at least the more adventurous ones) are constantly trying to look different from the other women, i.e. their competition. They're trying to look "foreign." BTW, the most gorgeous women I recall from my travels were in Krakow, Poland. At times it seems like there must have been a beauty queen convention in town. And Krakow is a fascinating city, with excellent history and architecture, and astonishingly low prices (at least, six years ago). OTOH, Krakow has disadvantages. One is the influx of obnoxious young British guys, flying in on Ryanair to get plastered and make total fools of themselves. Białystok has exported it's fair share of hot chicks. I worked here http://www.posk.org/ for a while and sampled the wares, Wyborowa, Zywiec, Żubrówka and of course the blonder products. We can be ****ed up idiots anywhere in the world. France, Belgium, Germany or even further afield. Wherever there is beer really. The other is this: http://www.krakowpost.com/article/6829 Oooooh!
