From The Age:

Stabbed to death over a yellow bike
By Sasha Shtargot
August 26, 2005

A 25-YEAR-OLD father of three was stabbed to death during an argument
about a bicycle in Collingwood yesterday.

Alex Cooper, of Reservoir, was with his partner Shelley and riding a
yellow bicycle when it is believed he was approached by three men in
Perry Street at 11.50am.

After an argument, Mr Cooper was stabbed in the chest and his bicycle
stolen. He died 40 minutes later after paramedics tried unsuccessfully
to revive him. His body was left in the street for more than two hours
as police inspected the scene.

Mr Cooper's partner returned just after 2pm, wailing over his body and
shouting angrily.

Three men were arrested in Abbotsford shortly after the murder, but
were cleared by police and released without charge. Detective Senior
Sergeant Ron Iddles of the homicide squad said police were still
looking for three men in their early 20s. "The girlfriend has said she
did not know them," Senior Sergeant Iddles said. "One was wearing a red
jacket and another a blue jacket." He said anyone who saw a yellow
racing bike with black handlebars and black grips should report it to
their local police station or Crime Stoppers.

Nari Hudson, Alex Cooper's cousin, said Mr Cooper had settled in
Melbourne a few months ago after coming from Perth. "He was just a
young guy having fun," she said. "It's terrible for his girlfriend to
see him like that lying on the grass."

Ms Hudson said Mr Cooper had three children under the age of six and
his family and the local Aboriginal community would be deeply hurt by
his death.

Collingwood traders and residents told The Age petty theft and crime
were common in the area, but murders were unusual.

Diarmuid Hannigan, the owner of Charada Desserts in Smith Street, said
traders were fed up with people drinking alcohol in public. "Every
single day people are drinking outside the Safeway supermarket and they
urinate everywhere," he said. "It's shocking. It's driving our customer
base away and driving people out of business."

Aidan Halloran, a resident of Otter Street, near the scene of the
murder, said the area was not unsafe but drunk people often caused
minor disturbances. "I've noticed that a lot of people who cause
trouble don't actually live here. They just come to this area," he
said.

"There are incidents of people being clobbered on the street randomly
by someone who is drunk. You hear a lot of people yelling and
screaming."

Stephen Jolly, a councillor with the City of Yarra, said there were
entrenched social problems in Collingwood's Housing Commission area,
but the suburb was no more dangerous than many others in Melbourne.

"Obviously it (the murder) is a terrible tragedy, but people need to
take a deep breath and not get carried away," he said. "A lot of people
live and shop in Smith Street every day and I would say it's one of the
safest places in Melbourne."

They have charged two people, I hope that the admission of menta
illness is not going to lead to farsical sentancing.
