Drivers do this all the time when there is a speed trap, drivers coming
the other way flash their lights ferociously as a warning to others.

ISTR it's an offence to warn other road users of a speedtrap/checkpoint
ahead, and reasonably so IMNSHO - it's obstruction of justice by
attempting to prevent the apprehension of a person while committing a
criminal act.

That's not the same.
Warning speeding drivers about speed traps stops them getting caught
and possibly banned if they accrue enough points, at which point they
will cease to be a danger to the public at large.

That's not the same.
Warning speeding drivers about speed traps stops them getting caught
and possibly banned if they accrue enough points, at which point they
will cease to be a danger to the public at large.

It stops them speeding at a dangerous point in the road, which is what the police are SUPPOSED to be doing. Why do you think most police encourage the use of satnavs with speed camera warnings on them, and provide information about where they set up mobile traps to such organisations?
