A man was allegedly assaulted by a cyclist at the entrance to
Centennial Park at Randwick last Wednesday.

According to the man, the cyclist cut across the front of his car, hit
the vehicle and fell from his bike. The driver said he asked the man
if he was OK, but the cyclist began "kicking in" the car panels,
resulting in almost $10,000 damage.

The driver got out of the car to ask for identification, but the
cyclist punched him in the side of his head and ran his bike over the
driver's toe, causing a fracture. Despite several witnesses to the
incident, the cyclist escaped from the scene and has not been
apprehended. Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to phone Crime
Stoppers or Eastern Beaches police.

Subscribed, but can't seem to see the readers comments. Dunno if it's
the FF browser or just another crappy interface. Any Sydney viewers
know anymore about this? Is there really anything in it or not?

Anyone remember the US bunch at the lights, van pulls up behind and
verbally warns them that they better be out of the way when the light
changes. Green. They take off, van floors it and destroys a guys rear
wheel. He throws his bike through the the windscreen.
That cyclist got to spend time in the police cells.
(My recollection may vary.)

ah that is gold!

Did the cyclist have to spend time in the cell because he didnt
verbally warn the driver he was going to throw his bike through the
windscreen??

Nah, it's coz the bike was spotted by coppers in the windscreen rather
than on the designated cycle lane

And so what was the penalty for the van driver for the attempted murder of a
bunch of people riding bikes?

A traffic fine I'd guess. Grrrr!!

I do like the approach taken to the drunk yob down in Korunburra in the
recent court case though. 11 years is starting to sound like some justice
for killing two people. Not enough, but some.

I was once on the jury panel for a case involving a truck driver who
dozed off while heading down a a highway, and whose truck swerved and
killed a cyclist. Not as easy as you think, deciding someone to be
guilty of manslaughter.

But, it was the only decision.

Yep, agreed that these circumstances may be difficult. But manslaughter is
simply causing a death through manifestly negligent behaviuor I thought. Is
driving until you fall asleep negligent?

Anyway the Korumburra case is much more blatant - drinking until he was over
3 times the legal limit, hardly able to stand, then he got into his hotted
up ute and did a bunout while leaving until he lost control and hit the
pedestrians. Sounds like manslaughter to my untrained eye. We need culpable
driving to be penalised just like manslaughter with a weapon.
