Halogen globes
Hi,
I'm after globes for my lighting system. I had a look in Jaycar and Bunnings, they had several globes but not the right size or voltage. The LBS had globes but not the right wattage and very overpriced. I'm mainly after a 10 watt globe (NR-10) but I'm interested in experimenting with a few other wattages for different applications. Anybody found a shop with a good range? Cheers, Duncan. |

Anybody found a shop with a good range? I've found Jaycar halogens iffy. Would be worthwhile to test them in the shop before purchase. I've had a few that glow orange rather than white, and last about half an hour. Needless to say I've long since not bought any from Jaycar. I bought a 12W 12 degree beam downlight from my local home lighting store, I imagine you should be able to get something similar in your neck of the woods. I've found this best overall for general night paved suburban path riding. Might not help if you have many tight corners though. For that, I've used two 4w (each) cateye bike lights, each splayed apart and upwards. They took care of lighting when turning corners. My forward facing 6W light (what i was using at the time) took care of the longer distance work. However, one helment mounted light would probably be better for this purpose if you don't mind the cables. If you're off-roading, you need something with more horsepower, and width. I used a 20W 36 degree downlight on the bike, along with a "normal" 6W bike light on my helmet. The 20watter took care of my peripheral vision, while the helmet mounted light was used for more directional obeservations. -- Linux Registered User # 302622 http://counter.li.org |

You'll have to get them from overseas. There are several outlets in UK where
10 W/6 V globes are available with various beam angles. I got three shipped out in a week or so from one of these (since lost URL) Bob C "Duncan" wrote in message ... There are a few specialist places. They can order in if needed. I'm mainly after a 10 watt globe (NR-10) but I'm interested in experimenting Quality/efficiency of these lamps vary enormously. Hopefully they can advise you which are best. For bikes, its often best to use a higher voltage than spec'd, increasing efficiency, but reducing life. |

For the beam angle reference, I assume you mean MR-11 halogens with dichroic reflector? I had no trouble getting them for specialist lamp shops (not lighting - just bulbs) in Perth. http://www.yellowpages.com.au/search...nessType=lamps I'm mainly after a 10 watt globe (NR-10) but I'm interested in Whats an NR-10 ? Does not google. |

I had a ring around several lighting shops today I finaly found Beacon lighting in St Kilda that had a huge range but even they hadn't heard of NR10 or NR15 globes. Seems like they are foreign or outdated codes. It seems MR11 is the equivalent. Still have a slight problem, even after the woman at Beacon rang several suppliers the only wattages she could get were 5,20 and 35. I have been running a 10 watt (which blew) which I use for commuting and racing it gets about 1.5 hours burn time. I have another 15 watt globe but I'm worried it won't last a whole race plus a warm up lap (potentialy up to an hour). Idealy I'm after another 10 watt but I think a 12 would be a good compromise. The LBS has 12 watt bulbs for $35 which seems excessive for a $15 bulb. The racing seems to take it's toll on the lights (one section runs between railway tracks so I may need a few of them and it'd be nice to have a cheap supply. |
