Indeed. I use the black. Salmon is for when you want people to know
you're a fancy person.


The red oxide ones last noticeably longer (both in wear life and in
their resistance to fossilizing with age), and are stronger in wet
conditions. They're also a little more likely to squeal in any given
setup.
