Default LETTER: Start of a new golden age for cycling

QUOTE:
As I was travelling along Winn Road, Southampton, today I saw a sight that really pleased me. A father was cycling with two children aged approximately nine and ten and they were all cycling on the road.

He appeared to be helping them to cycle around the traffic and to observe the Highway Code. I think this would have been rare pre covid 19.

It shows how life could be in the city if we did not have so many cars on the roads.

This is the start of the #ChooseCycling campaign and hopefully heralds the start of a “new golden age" for cycling as announced by the Prime Minister last week.
The government has pledged £2billion towards this goal.

In other cities across the country roads have been closed to cars to support pedestrians and cyclists, Southampton has not done this.

We wait in hope for new cycle lanes and for part of the £2 billion package of measures to support this ambition where cyclists and pedestrians are given priority over polluting cars.

"Let's all go back and live in 1890".

Er... not for me, thanks.

Hopefully, we can do what The Netherlands did in the 1970's and rebuild roads giving priority to the people and not motor vehicles. Look at modern day Holland for an example of how to do it right.

It is quite remarkable how the place has changed since I left the
Netherlands as a teenager. Then, motor vehicles had become established
and roads were built to the classic format we have in Britain.

When I visited a few years ago I was gobsmacked by the changes to the
estate. Engineering out priority to motor vehicles certainly seems to
work. They also like trees along pavements. These cover the bland modern
houses but also help with the calming effect.

Do people in motor vehicles not count as people?

Indeed - I have visited The Netherlands at least every year since 1976 and there are no cycle helmets worn there either. Pedestrians and cyclists mix freely on shared paths as well.

[There's no need for you to answer in respect of pedestrians. We already
know you regard pedestrians as expendable scum.]

No. They get all necessary convenience from not using their legs for
propulsion.

....the words of a driver.
