People making a living in the cycling business
I'm going to pick up on a piece of the Joey D thread.
I made the argument that he needed to step up and defend himself in public if he wanted to minimize the damage to his coaching business. There was a reponse of the standard type that you can't make it in this business. My take on that is pretty much the opposite. Most of you know I'm Northampton Cycling Club, that's Myerson, Roszko, Bilodeau, Frey, Verheul, Matt White etc... Quite a few of these people are making a living in the sport. I have no idea how much they are making, and don't care, but they are doing what they want to and love to, and making it work while giving back to the sport in a big way. There are other people here who are working on being able to because they love it. What they all seem to have in common is intelligence, education, patience, planning, love of the sport, and the will to work their ass off to be able to do what they want. I do not judge success by money. My old man can't even count his money, I haven't spoken to him in 15 years because he's scumbag who'd rob his father, and did. I have been getting by for about 1.5 years now in my own business. I'm not getting rich, but, I can make time to work the races I want to, be there to help out friends when they need it, volunteer time where I want, spend tons of time with my kids, and generally live the way I want. To me that's worth a whole lot more than money, and that's what I mean when I say that the people I know are doing well in the cycling business. Bill C |

As long as they don't turn around and scream that I ought to support them I'm glad that they can live their lives with such happiness as they can find. I'm all for doing what you want to do as long as you then don't proclaim the "right" to a socialist government so that you are supported in your old age by those who felt a little more responsibility towards the rest of us and worked at jobs that they didn't care for so that they'd be independent when it counted. |

Socialist governance is about getting (coercing) *someone else* to do what you want. "I don't make jokes. I just watch the government and report the facts." -- Will Rogers "Be thankful we're not getting all the government we're paying for." -- Will Rogers "The mystery of government is not how Washington works but how to make it stop." -- P. J. O'Rourke "We will put Social Security in a lock box." -- Albert Gore |
