Default HA-III Cree SSC P7-C (SXO) 3-Mode 900-Lumen

I ride to/from work about 5 miles each way in the middle of the night
and do an occasional 30 mile night ride and am not a techie. I have
an Epillion 180 & am looking for a little more power. I've looked at
a couple of 250 lumens on Nashbar in the $120 range (forgive my next
post please). A couple of techies in my clum swear by the HA-III Cree
SSC P7-C (SXO) 3-Mode 900-Lumen light:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.29489

I've never heard of it or the company. Is anyone aware of this
light? It is about $86, seems a little fishy to me. Could you please
offer opinions?

Thanks in advance... Bob

Unless you are really fast, you should have a back-up light or a main
light with replaceable batteries for a 30 mile night ride. Or a hub
dynamo powered light.

I have two of these, one is a "Magicshine", the other is a near
identical device rebranded by a NZ mail order parts retailer
(Torpedo7.com.au, branded with "house barnd" Route 7".

I have a 25km commute and usual do not depart for home until near dark.

Bluntly they are a fantastic light, nothing else I've seen has the
sheer illumination power or penetration (I ride 8km on a unlit highway).

I carry a backup 1W led light which to dat eI've never needed to use. I
have the Magicshine tail light, but I also have a Cateye Ld1100 and I
use both on the premise that I won't see it if a tail light goes out.

I have had various forms of halogen lights (Sigma Evo-X being the most
recent) - The magic shine is brighter, has a better focussed beam,
burns longer and has a lighter battery pack.

NOTE. There have been some problems reported with the Chinses sourced
battery packs. If you are really worried, replace with a locally made
up set, or even use a lead Acid gel cell. For mine, I charge and store
the battery pack in a sturdy fire proof box and disconnect from the
charger when charged (the leak-down is very slow).

The no-name, direct from China stuff is cheap, but quality control can
be pretty sketchy. It's really best suited to those who don't mind
fiddling with stuff a bit. I think of it like factory built wheels, kind
of semi-DIY -- further assembly often required, but still cheaper than
buying the raw parts. Beware lumen ratings, they're often inflated, and
difficult to compare apples-to-apples.

I have been riding one of these DX lights in the rain for 2 years. They are
one of the outstanding bargains in cycling. On a full charge and high beam
you will get close to 3 hours of run time. The beam is very powerful. Only
complaint is with the old velcro battery bag - in bumpy conditions it could
come undone. This happened to me and the battery pack almost went into the
spokes.

You cannot get anything with even close to the same price/performance ratio.
Buy it.

While you're at it, get one of their Cree-based flashlights for a
helmet-mount. Use a velcro strap to attach this to one of the top grooves
in your brain bucket. Don't forget the charger and spare rechargable
batteries.
