Default Cyclist killed on my route tonight

Just read that a cyclist was killed this evening. He was riding in a group
of 12 which I had passed just10 minutes before. The group had to overtake
some pedestrians. The man was riding in the back of the group and didn't
noticed the rest was overtaking the pedestrians, hit the rear wheel of the
man in front of him, fell in the middle of the narrow country road and was
run over by a truck that couldn.t avoid him. F*ck.

I hate riding in big groups. Always someone who is not paying attention.

A couple weeks ago, riding with about 10 folks, I had a guy sneak up
unannounced on my right side (i.e. edge of the road). I'm normally
pretty good about keeping a mental inventory of who is where, but this
guy on my blind side surprised me. And he's not a very steady rider; I
don't like to be near him.

Anyway I said "Good grief! If you _have_ to pass on the right, at least
call out 'On your right'!"

Within two miles, the same guy came up close beside me on my left,
calling out "On your right!" He then suddenly cut across in front of
me, too close for my comfort.

Riding in a group always requires much more attention. Some of my
attention goes to knowing whom to avoid.

Sorry to hear that. As someone that does a lot of group riding I
understand the danger. There are a lot of benefits but you have to have
good communication of hazards.

Wow, that is very sad. Crashing in a pack should not have such serious consequences. In the US, the truck driver would be presumed negligent for failing to maintain sufficient distance to avoid a rear end collision.

exertion produces mistakes

some should not group ride

some should not ride.

what was the deceased's driving record ?

Once, entering a busy roadway, I put muh foot then muh leg thru the triangle and rode away falling directly onto the road....

no traffic.

As I understand it now it was a front end collision. Still don't understand why this could have happen. When a truck comes from the opposite direction the group should not have overtaken the pedestrians on that narrow road. It leaves too little room for an error. Sad. I don't now the legal consequences for the truck driver but he was probably as far right as possible.

On my ride last fryday I was gaining on a large group (20-30 persons). I was still negotiation with myself whether I would ride with that group for a while. I decided not to. At that moment a van came from the opposite direction and while they were riding two abreast they had ride closer to each other to let the van pass on that narrow road. Kkk..beng two handlebars touched each other and three riders crashed and went into the cornfield.

Groups larger that 8 people...not for me.

Quebec law puts a max of 15 on a cycling group. Our club makes it 12.
The group I generally ride with is 8 or 9.

Some groups that are too performance oriented will try passing other riders
or pedestrians when it's unsafe. As if they're on a closed race track. I
stay away from them.

It's still sad to see cyclists down. We've had too many crashes this
year. A good friend just fell a couple weeks ago breaking her collar bone
and some ribs. 4th collar bone this season. Several others crashed with
varying degrees of damage.

Cycling is statistically very safe but sometimes the randomness of
accidents makes it seem different.
