I was informed by someone who as ridden with you, that you were one of the
best riders they have seen. Also, because you've been at this for so long,
you've seen a lot of gear break. You know what works, and what does not.

Just someone who like to see accusations based on observation rather than
rumor. OTOH, this whole thread is very muddled - it was unclear what you
meant by "he's the real thing" (as you seem to be focusing on his riding
ability), while the previous poster wrote "Whether your a keyboard jerk or
the real thing is an intriguing mystery", implying that "the real thing"
meant a real jerk.

is hardly an accusation. Whether he's a jerk or not, is something I do not

real life.

Obviously you "get it" more than you were given credit for. Any flaming
and such probably had more to do with the thread that preceeded you. I for
one apologize for the misinterpretation.

Depends. Usually my Trek OCLV 9800, unless I'm riding the fireroads around
my house, where I ride my old Marin Bear Valley SE (with tires more
appropriate for the flight back down).

I think its a really plush ride, which came as a surprise to me. I just
bought it because it was light, and there are too damn many hills to climb
around here. I was a little worried about breaking my "plastic" frame, but
its been bashed into so many things over the years that I don't see that
happening. It shows scratches really badly though, and after 6 years it
looks like I've been awfully unkind to it.

Plus it has the "Trek" name on it, so thieving nitwits have shown less
interest in it than my Marin that's worth 1/3 as much.

Ain't that the truth about carbon! I put my Easton bar on a few weeks ago,
and it seemed like when anything metallic touched it, a scratch was left.

Funny carbon story:

I was racing in a local XC race a few years ago, and a guy shows up with one
of those GT FS carbon bikes, with the aluminum exoskeleton. I did not pay
him much mind until he donned his full body armour! This is an XC race in
Louisiana! To top it off, he enters the sport class, a 20 mile race. The
'Fred' didn't make one lap, because he didn't lighten his front wheel when
he came to a dip in the trail, and scored a '9.0' endo, and snapped the
frame clean in two, a few inches behind the head tube.
