At least one person needs it. Is there any end to crap that doesn't solve a problem sold to cyclists. The problem of premature rim wear? An arguable benefit in terms of cost, but real nonetheless. You could also go with a mountain bike fork. There normally is ample tire clearance, just wrong rim brake placement which is moot due the disc brake. Good suggestion. Actually, many disc-type mtb forks are coming without canti studs these days. That would of course change your head tube angle and trail Actually, not nearly as much as you might expect. Modern MTB forks are either suspension forks or are "suspension corrected" rigid forks, with tons of clearance above the tire. I was running a Rock Shox suspension fork on my IRO Jamie Roy fixed gear for a while, with a skinny 559 wheel and the handling was just fine. The only reason I stopped was to use the fork for another project. .. See: http://sheldonbrown.org/iro The bike has a sloping top tube even with the plastic "road" fork I was using before installing the boinger. At the moment the plastic fork is back, and the new plan for the IRO involves converting to 584 mm (650B) wheels.
