It's generally cooler in the morning. Air is sometimes cleaner too.

If you are just riding around the block, it doesn't matter much when
you start, but if you have an all day ride over Tioga and Conway (CA)
passes, the day has limited sunshine. I like to start rides that will
take most of the day before 7:00. That goes for my tours locally and
in the Alps

The Sierra are calling, the passes are open.

For all of you who travel to do organized rides, how far will you
drive? Will you drive there and back for the day, do you prefer to
stay overnight, etc? How far for either?

Most longer rides start very early, plus a lot of people would
rather relax in a hotel room than drive home after a hard century
or whatever.

If I'd have to get up earlier that 5:45am to drive to the ride, I'd
either head out the night before or skip the ride. I'm just so not a
morning person.

In our case (http://www.cyclingdoubleheader.com), it's because it takes
all day for many people to finish the ride (Mountains of Misery). Even
with a 7am start, we still have people trying to finish after 6pm. Note
that our easier ride (Wilderness Road Ride) still lets people start
at a more civilized 9am.

One of our biggest challenges, organization-wise, is being ready for early
arrivals at 5am or before. They come early and nap in their cars for an
hour or two.

Anyway, the reason I ask is that I'm looking for marketing ideas for next
year's event.

I don't mind carrying a light and I like night riding. I don't like
getting up earlier on the weekends to go for a ride than I do for going
to work. I am most definitely not a morning person...

That sounds like fun.

I'll say. Using Google Earth to explore potential routes is making me
depressed. I need some mountains!

Offer free camping beforehand.

Or a two-fer with another nearby ride.

Might want to add city and state to your website. I see you're having
breakfast at a college recently prominent in the news, but that's w-a-
a-a-y down the page.

The site is getting an update (or maybe a makeover) some time
today, so thanks for the suggestion!

I know I'll get in trouble for saying this, but there's a local cultural
affliction that always prevents at least one key piece of information from
being included in every directions listing or other communication. I'm
fighting it as hard as I can, but eventually I'll probably be
afflicted too!

It's not just you, and not just bike tours.

Got a message from a folkie music message board. God's gift to
acoustic music is coming to a special event (day, date, time). Five
paragraphs of kudos and testimonials follow, and finally in the next
one ... appears the location.

Just remember: who, what, where, when, and why. Proofread. Send it to
your aunt in Homer Alaska and ask her if there's enough info. And
don't go off about a date and time change in the "S.H." when writing
info about a local ride.
