Had a look online and found a few negative reviews - any comments?

Thanks.

That was the worst of the bad reviews I found.

Can't find any markings to indicate what model the caliper is, it looks
simple enough - its not immediately obvious what could go wrong with it.

I put Avid hydraulics on my CX bike and they work extremely well without a problem. So unless there's something that is a great advantage with the Artek I would suggest those.

Above all remember that disks are a whole new world of braking and over-braking is VERY easy. So use a lot of care getting used to them.

The great advantage of the Artek caliper; it was free with a salvage set of
forks.

Had plenty of motorcycles with disc brakes - the grabbiest brakes I've used
were twin leading shoe drum brakes.

Its mechanical, not hydraulic - so I'm not expecting great things.

I must say, that bothers me. It reminds me of the power brakes on my
dad's 1959 Pontiac. The Pontiac's difference between a gentle stop and
locking four wheels was maybe an ounce on the brake pedal.

I've seen a bike rider go over the bars because she wasn't familiar with
the high mechanical advantage of dual pivot caliper brakes, compared to
the single pivot she previously had. Disks could be even worse.

And thinking about the four bikes I ride most frequently: If the brakes
varies that much, I might be prone to use the wrong lever force when a
traffic light suddenly turned red on me. Seems like it would be far too
easy to either roll out into the intersection or fly over the bars.

My wife has a Honda Jazz (called something else in the U.S. I believe)
and I have a 20 year old Isuzu (diesel) pickup. Both have power brakes
but the difference in driving them is rather significant. If you stamp
on the Honda brakes with anything like the force that you use on the
Isuzu you lock the wheels.

Here it's called the Honda Fit. I prefer the Jazz name. It's jazzier.

I've bought two small Honda's for my wife, Initially a Civic and now
that the Civic has moved up market, the Jazz, and other than one
alternator which failed because the rubber boot over the connecting
wires got pushed off center and allowed water to get in, have had
literally no problems whatsoever. We do have it serviced at
recommended frequencies though.

Perhaps this is true of other makes but as they used to say, "dance
with the one that brung you", and as it seems to work for us we'll
stick with it.
